Thousands of revellers have flocked to the first day of the Notting Hill Carnival as the event kicked off in bright sunshine following fears it would be hampered by rain.

Performers danced through the west London streets in bright and colourful costumes, with big baselines and whistles filling the air.

The giant floats of the parade will make their way around several locations, starting at Westbourne Park Underground station, going up Kensal Road, along Ladbroke Grove and down Westbourne Grove.

Guests had witnessed a vibrant act early on when charity Kinetika Bloco brought out its dancers that were dressed in pink, green and white costumes.

Up to one million people are expected to attend Europe’s biggest street festival, with the more chilled out children’s day taking place first today, and the adult’s event scheduled for the following day.

Visitors will get to experience the sights and sounds of the Caribbean, including culture, food, music and dance.
