So I just read this article and felt the need to spread the word.
Little Lions aims to be the first permanent cat sanctuary and tea house in North America, with plans to secure a location in downtown NYC and open in Spring 2015, should they reach their crowdfunding goal of $65,000 (as of November 7th they have $38,548).
Little Lions is partnered with Anjellicle Cats Rescue, a no-kill all volunteer non-profit organization that has cared for NYC’s abandoned, neglected, and stray cats and kittens for 10 years. They are also partnered with the Animal Care & Control of NYC.
Depending on the size of the space, 10-20 cats will be roaming the cafe at a time for people to pet and play with. There will also be a “cats-only” area where the cats can slip off to when they want to be alone and rest.
All the cats will be available for adoption, and they plan to hold regular adoption events as well. Cats will only be adopted after a thorough screening of the adotpters and their homes.
"The only caveat is that people who would like to adopt will need to be vetted to ensure our kitties are going to loving homes, including a home visit," McShane explained. "It will not be as simple as picking a cat you love and taking them home, but applications will be available on site at Little Lions which will ‘hold’ the cat and start the adoption process."
To comply with health codes, the tea house and the cat sanctuary will be completely separate. Drinks will be primarily tea, with a few other options available. There will be a coffee option, but don’t expect a barista. If there is food, it would be a few small items made off-site and guaranteed cat-safe.
You can read all about it here on their Tilt crowdfunding page (this is also where you can pledge donations), and here on the Gothamist article covering their efforts.
As of November 7th, they have 15 days to reach their goal of $65,000. They’re a little over halfway there.
Please help if you’re able to donate! Thank you!
