Is one day per month – set aside to be intentionally strategic in focusing ON your business with the intent of developing your top and bottom lines, organization and ministry impact – as much focus as you truly need to attain ‘best-in-class’ leadership? No, but amazingly, the discipline and sustained focus which such a monthly day provides via the C12 Process results in a breakthrough for most Christian business leaders and owners. Leaders often confuse busyness with progress and fail to strategically develop their business, products, markets and outreach with long-term purpose and vision in mind! C12’s extensive, seven-year curriculum of customized, highly-targeted materials (‘by Christian CEOs for Christian CEOs’), combined with carefully-selected supplemental resources and affiliates, often results in sharply enhanced general management leadership. More than just a Christian CEO roundtable, C12 members minister to each other via transparent discussion and prayer.
Biblically, we are called to diligence and wise counsel, not the hard work and busyness which we often fall victim to in our personal efforts to achieve ‘success’. In Proverbs alone we are exhorted 22 times to seek wise counsel! Working successfully, according to principles which are eternally true, enables an approach to leadership which is compatible with life balance and capacity for ministry. With this in mind, C12 is firmly founded on three pillars, each of which have proven to be effective over many years and in many circumstances: Scripture, small group process dynamics, and one-on-one mentoring.
Scripture is God’s special revelation to His people for their benefit in living lives of purpose and fruitfulness consonant with His will. The other two pillars are easily seen in Scripture as mechanisms which God ordains to sharpen His people and which secular ‘academians’ have observed as useful in practice. Small group dynamics enable the best overall input to be distilled from a group of experts with diverse backgrounds, gifts and experiences. This mirrors the instructions which Christ gave to His church (The Body in Ro 12, 1 Co 12, Eph 4, Col 2:19) and has become viewed as a fundamental leadership tool (i.e., synergy, Drucker, mastermind/brainstorming methods, etc.). Likewise, mentoring and/or coaching has gained great currency in recent years as folks have discovered its benefits. The humility to truly engage in balanced mentoring (i.e., sharing the truth in love) is rare outside the Lordship of Christ. A clear part of New Testament history (consider Paul, Barnabas, Timothy, Silas, John Mark and others), mentoring has now come to be appreciated in its various forms (peer, up & down). C12 utilizes each of these three pillars – in addition to well-researched ‘best-in-class’ contemporary examples, case studies, and the mirror of self-assessment – to provide its members a practical and effective development curriculum for themselves and their companies.
The C12 Group monthly process, meeting format and resources have been carefully tailored over the years to deliver significant life and business-enhancing impact for members who engage with both high levels of expectation and personal commitment. As a Christian CEO roundtable and an interactive peer community of believers, the effective functioning of group relationships relies on the stability, timeliness and understanding which accompany faithful attendance and transparency. C12’s proven materials and process do work in challenging, inspiring, equipping and ministering to members who participate in a faithful manner. The individual strengths of each C12 Area Chair may help to further supplement C12’s baseline materials, but these materials, combined with the Holy Spirit’s enabling of each member, routinely provide a noteworthy value-added difference to member Christian business owners or CEOs. For C12 Group members, the monthly eight-hour process roughly breaks down into the following elements:
Devotion/Prayer/Fellowship – 40%
Executive Education – 25%
Coaching/Accountability – 25%
Peer Forum/Sharpening – 30%
The simple discipline of receiving relevant objective input on our roles as leaders, spouses, parents and children of God is priceless in breaking age-old habits and attaining new levels of excellence and fruitfulness. The ability to bring timely issues and an annual in-depth ‘Core Business Presentation’ (see C12 Tri-Value Model) before a knowledgeable and intimate peer group, with literally hundreds of years of combined executive experience, is an uncommon privilege. The wisdom of each group’s prior ‘lessons learned’ and a healthy reliance on God’s Word and prayer, gained in a safe and confidential environment, is a great resource for the Christian business leader. Linking each month’s learning with ‘To-Do List’ accountability, an annual in-depth analysis of the overall personal and business development, and performance provides a fundamentally sound equilibrium process, and an uncommon focus on strategic planning which benefits C12 members no matter the stage or shape of their business/industry.

At any point in time, roughly one-third of C12 members fall into one of the following three categories: (1) thriving, (2) complacent/stale or (3) struggling. Amazingly, C12’s peer process, materials and mix of members operates like the inter-connected parts of the Body in a good church with each playing a vital role in ministering to the rest in a spirit of unity. Those who are thriving may be at risk of living lives of imbalance, busyness, materialism and diluted witness. They may be tempted to seize further share or scale advantage via rapid expansion, acquisition, added fixed cost/debt or otherwise complicating their situation in ways which might lack wisdom and balanced judgment. Others may be complacent, stuck in long-term habits and satisfied to continue doing things the way they always have, in spite of fresh opportunities and/or serious changes in industry dynamics (remember buggy whip manufacturers and candle stick makers?). They may slowly lose the opportunity to gracefully manage a strategic transition, develop a stronger organization or market position, and may squander their chance to effectively steward the company toward a successful future legacy. Those who are struggling mightily in their business or personal lives will find strength in C12 peer relationships and hope in the Lord to be indispensable during this time of great trial. C12 has witnessed countless examples of such members persevering, ‘pressing on’ and ‘renewing their strength’ on the way toward long-term revitalization and victory. In every case, the Lord uses the life experience, faith and wisdom resident in the peer group, C12 materials and Scripture to produce a synergistic result beyond that which the individual Christian Business Owner or CEO might attain independently!
