I took a free CCW course at a range off the Strip today. I'd have to say it was pretty good and would recommend it if you are on a budget or just want to check the box. Clearly, if you need to learn to shoot or get better at it, go take that kind of course, but it was good intro course for experienced or semi-experienced shooters.
The first 4 hours were basic firearms safety, operation, and cleaning. Then 2 hours or so of legal stuff. The last 2 hours were carrying, shooting, scenarios, and what to expect. Then we spent about 10 minutes qualifying on the range. Course of fire was: 6 rounds at 3 yards, 12 rounds (6 rounds, reload, 6 rounds, at 5 yards, and another 12 at 7 yards.
The basic portion of the class would be great for someone who is new to guns and has had little more than a basic introduction to guns with a friend or family member. There was nothing wrong with the legal portion, we read mostly from the state codes. None of the stories of erroneous information or bad advice I’ve read about.
The instructor and several of the more serious shooters commented that it would be nice if the 4-day defensive handgun courses were mandatory to carry. Not that they ‘wished’ this to be true, but expressed a sincere desire that people be able to effectively defend themselves and encouraged us to take ‘dynamic’ training courses to simulate actual shooting scenarios.
The only thing I didn’t like was people being iffy on open carrying. But then again, it’s a CCW class :001_tongue:
So, NV and Utah permit (for $50, less than what I would pay for a NV course), it was worth it. I might collect these things now… :getsome:
Excellent facility. I'd recommend it if you're in the neighborhood. Though I must admit, those tourists are annoying!
