The Position
Position, Location and Scope

The Senior BioRepository Scientist position will facilitate the daily operation associated with the Biorepository in the Biospecimen Management (BSM) function at RMD. Daily operation includes, but is not limited to, management of multiple projects associated with inventory, processing, distribution, storage, and disposition of biological materials.

Biological materials serve as the foundation for research, development and validation of medical products. Availability of specimens is a critical and often a “rate limiting” step in research, development, launch, and support of products. Careful management of the planning, procurement, inventory and distribution process is critical.

The BioSpecimen Management function at Roche Molecular Diagnostics (RMD) supports the acquisition, characterization, and management of biological materials, and build of select panels fit for purpose of RMD research and development activities. This position will be based at RMD in Pleasanton, California.

Responsibilities:
* The candidate designs, plans and executes assigned biorepository management projects associated with, but not limited to, biological material shipments, verification of materials, resolution of discrepancies, material distribution, communication/negotiation with internal clients (i.e., project teams) and external suppliers, and related activities utilizing established and innovative procedures, and applying area knowledge and accumulated experience to complete projects.
* Contributes to the definition and timely achievement of overall project goals.  Makes recommendations, and when appropriate, acts independently to resolve problems encountered to improve productivity.  Ensures activities are consistent with project requirements, and responds appropriately to changing priorities.
* The candidate assumes responsibility for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of all assigned projects and related activities, and keeps supervisor and project teams informed of project status, particularly of significant findings and results in critical problem areas.
* Establishes and manages internal/cross-functional/customer relationships.
* Presents findings at group or departmental meetings.  May assist in preparing summaries, reports, presentations, etc.
* Performs work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA).
* Maintains inventory of biological material and associated data in the laboratory management system. Assumes accountability for electronic records management and use of validated systems ensuring information is maintained in a timely manner, accurately and consistently, and according to established formats.
* Participates in routine lab maintenance, lab safety, ISO, and QSR implementation.
* Work involves resolving difficult problems in creative ways. Takes a new perspective on existing solution, exploring and implementing new concepts and methodologies.
* Works independently and manages work flow to accomplish assigned objectives in a laboratory environment with materials at lower temperatures.
* May act as a lead for assigned projects or team. May or may not have supervisory responsibility; provides guidance to new team members and leads internal/external teams and builds professional relationships.
* Keeps informed of trends and developments in area of responsibility.

Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
* 5 years of related experience required.
* Work experience within biorepository environment preferred.
* Experience with Microsoft Office applications, such as, Word, Excel, Access a must.
* Good organizational skills are essential. Able to plan and develop projects.
* Good networking skills.
* Flexibility with respect to projects, unique specimen handling requirements, and meeting client/organizational goals and expectations.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to present information to a broad range of audiences.
* Ability to teach and lead others.
* Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment with efficiency; and capable of handling multiple projects.
* Truly passionate about the importance of biorepository management, as well as the ability to work in a global, matrixed environment.
* Good cross-functional participation skills.
