General Function

The Associate Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with a high academic rank who has demonstrated a sustained record of effectiveness in teaching, research including scholarly publications, and service appropriate to the discipline. The Associate Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head which may include serving as an academic advisor. The Associate Professor engages in scholarly activities beyond those associated with teaching and is expected to demonstrate professional productivity in research, based upon the availability of resources and consistent with the mission of the University.

Description of Primary Duties

The Associate Professor is expected to serve in a manner consistent with the public affairs mission of the university, through the three pillars of ethical leadership, community engagement and cultural competence; and with teaching, research and service duties as detailed in the Missouri State University faculty handbook. Primary duties of this position include:

* The successful candidate will express a strong professional identity, as a counselor educator through their activities, i.e. association with and presentations to and publications through professional organizations such as ACA, AMHCA or ASCA and/or their affiliates and divisions and a willingness to comply with Council on Accreditation of Counselor-Education Related Programs (CACREP) standards.

* The successful candidate will provide live clinical supervision to master’s students in our community-based counseling clinic.

* The successful candidate will teach graduate courses in counseling. Teaching assignments could be in any of the Masters in Counseling tracks (School of Mental Health) and potentially in the Educational Specialist degree in Counseling and Assessment. Specific course assignments could include general and school counseling courses, practicum and internships, substance abuse, psychopharmacology, crisis and trauma, supervision, consultation, and leadership, research,testing and assessment, and play therapy.

* The successful candidate will interact and collaborate with other academics and school/community counselors while keeping pace with the emerging body of knowledge in counseling; and will engage in research in counseling while facilitating student involvement in such projects, including publications, presentations and other scholarly endeavors.

* The person will also provide proactive advising and creative mentoring to program students. The person has the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary fashion within a multi-faceted department including student affairs, a cooperative doctoral program in educational leadership and policy analysis with the University of Missouri-Columbia, special education, and educational administration programs as well as the broader university with diverse programs and students.

* The Associate Professor is expected to serve as an engaged citizen, leader and advocate on various university committees, taskforces and as an individual and work within the professional discipline and broader local, state, national, and international communities. The candidate may hold or obtain various certifications and licenses beyond minimum qualifications as part of the acquisition and sharing of expertise.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Associate Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. Positions associated with this position classification may be located in facilities requiring the position to be designated “sensitive” as defined by University policy. Positions associated with this position classification may include job duties, responsibilities, or activities that are subject to export control regulations. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Additional Qualifications

Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program or closely related degree (prior to start of employment)
Licensed or License-Eligible as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and/or Certification or Certification-Eligible as a School Counselor in the state of Missouri
Demonstrated commitment to, and experience working with, diverse populations
Demonstrated experience working in school counseling or eligible for certification as a school counselor.
Experience with and accomplishments in teaching, research, and service consistent with the rank of Associate Professor
