This position performs food service work in the areas of pre\-meal prep work, assembly, distribution, and clean up for all areas of the hospital including the cafeteria, deli, espresso bar, patient units, and for catered hospital functions\. Employees may be responsible for ordering and maintaining proper ingredient stock levels and performing cashier duties\. Incumbents also must ensure that stockroom inventory is used by the authorized personnel\.

This position works under the supervision of the Nutrition Care Services Supervisor but may also receive instruction from Nutrition Care Technicians\. In patient care units, incumbents in this position are responsible for providing nutritional care to 50 to 70 patients daily\. In the cafeteria, incumbents are responsible for handling up to $5000 in daily, cash transactions\.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients\.

\### Responsibilities:

+ Sets up food assembly areas, including the patient tray line, and performs other prep duties required to ensure well coordinated food production\.

+ Prepares all types of food according to instructions written in standardized recipes\. Portions and packages food in a timely and sanitary fashion\.

+ Provides quality food service to patient rooms and to the cafeteria, deli, and espresso bar customers\.

+ Assures that food is prepared and delivered as ordered, returns to pick up trays and other nutrition equipment from patient rooms, and follows through on any complaints or problems when necessary\.

+ Coordinates activities with Cooks and other Nutrition Services staff, as necessary, to ensure that the department functions properly\.

+ Washes dishes and pots using dishwashing equipment, cleans assigned area and equipment daily, mops floors and performs other light cleaning duties\.

+ Ensures that food trays delivered to patient units contain the correct meals in accordance with recognized special patient diets such as low sodium, fluid restricted, etc\.

+ May perform catering functions such as setting up various types of meal services assuring that the food arrives on time and in an aesthetically pleasing manner\. Responds to any problems or complaints relating to the catering function\.

+ May perform ingredient inventory and storeroom maintenance, ordering and adjusting supplies as necessary\.

+ Ensures that condiment containers and automatic change dispenser are full and operational\. Rotates stock to ensure that ingredients and food items are always fresh\.

+ May check inventory levels and prepare storeroom orders\.

+ May direct up to ten employees if assigned to a lead position\.

\### Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

+ Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above\.

+ Demonstrated knowledge of basic math\.

+ Demonstrated human relations, customer service, time management, and effective communication skills\.

+ Ability to comply with departmental policies regarding attendance and undergo periodic evaluations\.

+ Ability to make decisions on matters for which departmental guidelines, policy and procedure authorizes them to do so, but know when to refer new or unusual situations to their supervisor\.

+ Ability to properly handle customer issues or complaints and perform and/or coordinate the activities of others to ensure proper functioning when operating under conditions of staff shortages\.

+ Ability to manage special requests made by patients and their families, and determine when to refer questions to Nutrition Care Supervisors or Technicians\.

+ Six months of food service or customer service experience, or equivalency\.

+ Current food service worker permit within one month of hire\.

\### Working Conditions and Physical Demands

_Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation\._

+ This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care\. This position may be subject to chemical and equipment hazards and is standing and walking for sustained periods of time\.

+ Incumbents may face exposure to potentially dangerous cleaning chemicals utilized in sanitation procedures as well as equipment/supply hazards such wet or hot work surfaces and sharp edges on food wrap containers or open cans, meat slicers and food processors\. The position involves lifting and/or pushing heavy supply containers, equipment and food carts\. Incumbents also face exposure to items discarded on patient and customer trays, including soiled bandages and tubing, spilled medications, bodily fluids, and patient care equipment such as used needles, clamps and scissors\.
