2014 has been a big year for the rise of producer and DJ collectives. The East Coast has especially been key in the growth of the club music influence with URL-to-IRL scenes and artists surfacing heavily around areas like Washington, New Jersey, Boston and Brooklyn. To get some insight on the rapid growth and focused styles of East Coast club, we reached out to Boston’s turnty-est producer and Moving Castle, Lifted Contingency, and Peach Boiz (RIP) affiliate, Robokid.
Check our Skype chat below, along with the premiere and free download of his new “No Type” remix.

Nest HQ: yoooo
Nest HQ: what’s good man?
Nest HQ: did u win the match [Robokid was playing Destiny before we started chatting]
robokid: Wats up
robokid: I didn’t win lol
Nest HQ: :(
robokid: I am trying to get better
robokid: I just got my ps4 abt a week ago
Nest HQ: ya, how you likin’ it?
robokid: It’s nice a f
robokid: It’s the white one
Nest HQ: yep :)
Nest HQ: any other games ur stoked on?
robokid: I really just want a new skate game those R my favorite hahaha
Nest HQ: oo didn’t know theres a new one
robokid: There isn’t one announced yet but I want one lol
Nest HQ: hahah
Nest HQ: ya so first off, what happened with peach boiz [a recently broken up Soundcloud collective]?
robokid: Hahaha I think I’ll be the first to make a public statement about it, but it was just a lot of things building up to that one point. The split was really sudden and a lot of people (in peachboiz) were confused because they didn’t have their say. I’m not going to point fingers at anyone but what is done is done so I’ll leave it at that. I have 100% faith in whatever Camm Davidson and Quoth decide to do next, those kids are the future.
robokid: It’s a touchy subject still haha
Nest HQ: got it.
Nest HQ: live show looked sick [based off Robokid's Twitter coverage]
robokid: Yeah, it’s unfortunate we only had one. We were trying to put something together for sxsw.
robokid: There will be a lot more collaborations with everyone in Peachboiz tho. We’re all still family.
Nest HQ: And new things on the way from Moving Castle!
robokid: Yeah haha we have a lot of things planned. I’m excited for volume 3
robokid: It’s the first time we are trying to do all originals
Nest HQ: sick! how did you guys all meet?
robokid: Moving Castle started because I told aobeats that me him and Manila killa should start a label seeing as we were producing similar styles of music and we had a bunch of Internet friend producers that we wanted to work with and help develop.
robokid: he brought the idea up to manila killa who was already in talks with hunt for the breeze about something similar so we all went in on it together.
robokid: AO and manila killa ran w the idea and came up w the name and logo ECT. But it wasn’t until 6 months after we came up with the collective that we dropped our first tape. It was very unorganized at first and we kind of just kept adding artists we liked to the Facebook group til we had a solid team. We still are always open to submissions.
robokid: we listen to everything that’s sent to us.
robokid: we also still chat daily on facebook group chat.
Nest HQ: that’s great. guessing the name is inspired by the miyazaki film?
robokid: Yeah, I didn’t come up with it.. That was mostly Andrew I think.
Nest HQ: is he the big anime nerd of the group?
robokid: Well we all like anime. I think luma (kappa kavi) is the biggest anime nerd out of all of us.
Nest HQ: nice. (big anime nerd here as well)
robokid: Hahaha
Nest HQ: i rly like how anime, video games, etc. are getting rep’d in club culture right now
Nest HQ: fashion too
robokid: Yeah, when I started producing I really was into chiptune and 8 bit video game music. I really just wanted to do that. I also was obsessed with my gameboy when I was younger so I guess I grew up on this type of music.
robokid: I really like how it’s starting to mesh with hip hop and club music I would have never thought I would be making this type of music when I first started.
Nest HQ: that’s sick.
Nest HQ: feel like a lot of this stuff is coming from up north. mass, washington, jersey etc.
robokid: They are all connected by the Internet. But I feel like there is a huge network of east coast artists that work together IRL ( in real life ). It’s not expensive to get from Boston to NYC to Philly. These states are all so close together that it creates a really unique experience for collaborating. I’d much rather collaborate with someone in person than over the Internet. It’s easier to get ideas across and its just more fun.
Nest HQ: How would you describe the East Coast sound?
robokid: The east coast has a bunch of different sounds right now. I feel like a lot of producers out this way are definitely focused on creating new styles whether it be Jersey club, vogue, philly club, bmore, etc. I think there’s a lot of creativity here which definitely has an impact on the emerging club sounds you hear all over the world right now.
Nest HQ: Any other s/o’s?
robokid: Damn this is a tough one there’s so many to choose from
robokid: I’m really proud of Ba Kuura
robokid: They are always consistent and making great music
robokid: Also I’m really proud of hydrabadd, guy akimoto, tone-ra, rusty hook, dugong jr … the list is way too long and I will forget people so I will stop
Nest HQ: :)
robokid: also I should mention my roommate is a nasty producer, you will hear from him soon
Nest HQ: ooooo
Nest HQ: when did you start noticing the whole east coast vibe / ur guys vibe becoming a “thing” which ppl were catching on to?
robokid: The first time I realized we had an “east coast following” was when they did the moving castle showcase in philly. I couldn’t make it but I saw pictures and there were so many people there. I think dj sega even crashed it and tried to DJ but was unsuccessful.
Nest HQ: LOL
robokid: There’s a lot of people that linger out Twitter and facebook that are on the east coast
robokid: I think it’s an international thing at this point though, I mean WRLD, Jailo & Kappa Kavi just did a showcase in the Netherlands.
Nest HQ: damn
robokid: And Dugong JR. Was just touring in Australia
robokid: We are also planning a SXSW showcase
Nest HQ: yess
robokid: Yung wallstreet lives in Austin so we will probably raid his crib
Nest HQ: what are some of your fav collectives outside the ones your in?
robokid: I’m a big fan of zone def and Bassment movement. They are two boston collectives that have been around longer than lifted but they are both pushing their own distinct sounds which I really like. I live w some of the bassment movement guys, they’re the ones that threw the RITON boat party this past September. They mainly focus on house and techno music which is completely out of my realm but I love what they are doing and they actually were the first people to teach me how to use CDJs haha so I give them a lot of credit.
Nest HQ: you’re one of the first to rep jungle with a mix of other stuff. was there a track that got you into it? or was it just something you decided to try
robokid: I have always loved drum n bass
robokid: The amen break is very spiritual to me haha.
Nest HQ: haa!
robokid: I have to credit this guy geode though, his music really inspired “Ur touch”
Nest HQ: were u surprised when a uk label hit u up to release that track?
robokid: Haha my friend Dustin (kidd Drunkadellic) hooked me up with them. We had just started with lifted contingency and he was sending my demos out. They really liked it and the rest was history. I really love all the remixes too.
Nest HQ: yeah! solid pack
Nest HQ: how did lifted come together?
robokid: Lifted Contingency is the brain child of kidd Drunkadellic. He’s a local dj from boston and he contacted me online to see if I wanted to join his new label. I wasn’t really sure what he was trying to do at first but as we got to know each other our similar interests in music became apparent and we became really good friends. I was the first producer that was brought into lifted contingency but now I’m joined by a bunch of talented DJs and producers: tone ra, graphs, Swelta, LightFoot and flat sprite.
robokid: Our sounds are all over the place but they range from jungle to grime to footwork to juke ECT.
robokid: We are a very diverse group haha but the biggest difference for me is that they are all local homies and it’s a solid mix of DJs and Producers.
robokid: Dustin just threw his first jungle/juke/footwork party in Boston called Pace.. It did really well, I wasn’t expecting that type of turnout to a footwork party in Boston but I was happily surprised. Tripletrain from Teklife headlined
Nest HQ: anything more on the scene?
robokid: I’m relatively new to boston, but I can give you my perspective on the east coast scene and what I like and what I think we need to improve on ahhaaha
Nest HQ: word
robokid: I am 22 and I started producing in highschool, my hometown is like an hour south of boston so There was no “club scene” for me growing up
robokid: Everything was online
robokid: Since I’ve moved up to boston I have met so many talented producers based here
robokid: I actually never realized how many like minded people there were, that lived so close to me, when it came to production and music. I love going to local shows in boston where it’s completely run by my friends.
robokid: one of the best live music venues in boston is at Go Yama’s crib. He had helix come play last winter and it was one of the most turnt house parties I’ve ever been to.
Nest HQ: SICK
Nest HQ: ok how did “turnty” start ["favor my turnty"]
robokid: I was drunk with aobeats and hunt for the breeze after their show in Boston and I was tweeting and I just tweeted “I am v turnty” and then the next day we saw it and couldn’t get over it and basically we still haven’t gotten over it. I hear the word several times a day. It’s a verb and a noun and can mean literally anything. I could go more in depth but it’s really not that interesting it’s another inside joke haha.
Nest HQ: last thing: what type of dude did u make in destiny?
robokid: Lol my guy is a exo warlock
robokid: Lol
Nest HQ: dope
robokid: I wann play rn
Nest HQ: i dunno what that is but sounds tight
robokid: Lol
robokid: I love the game it’s RLY sick
robokid: It’s like halo
robokid: And I used to RLY like halo lol
Nest HQ: yeahh rly down
robokid: It’s awesome to me that you fuck with my music & moving castle & Peachboiz (rip)
Nest HQ: DEF! you guys are all solid. great chat man
