ORIGINAL POST: Detroit Lions owner Martha Ford isn’t messing around.

The Lions fired general manager Martin Mayhew and team president Tom Lewand on Thursday, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Detroit is 1-7 this season after suffering a 45-10 blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in London.

These aren’t the first changes in the Motor City, as head coach Jim Caldwell already fired three of his assistants, including offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. But the front office shakeup clearly reflects Ford’s displeasure with the situation, especially after the Lions advanced to the playoffs last season.

The firings come during an awful start, but they likely also have something to do with Detroit’s inability to draft quality players of late. One could argue the two go hand in hand.

Lions haven't drafted a Pro-Bowl player in the past 5 drafts. No player they drafted in 2010-2011 is on their roster today.

Lions traded 2010 2nd-round pick for RB Jahvid Best. 2nd-round picks since: Titus Young, Ryan Broyles, D Slay, Kyle Van Noy, Ameer Abdullah.

It remains to be seen whether Caldwell will keep his job. He guided the Lions to an 11-5 record last season, but things can’t get much worse than they’ve been for Detroit this season.

Either way, the entire organization — whoever’s left — must be on notice amid the current overhaul.
