The Movie
Straight into the action with The Avengers attacking a hydra facility (crossover to Agents of Shield), making short work of getting through the defenses to obtain the scepter from the first movie. Wanda and Pietro manage to elude the team after Wanda messed with Starks mind showing him his worst nightmare where the team is dead and he alone remains. Black Widow uses a post hypnotic suggestion to get the Hulk to power down into Banner. Hawkeye is injured and the team return to base.
Back on the base Banner and Stark work on the staff, noting intelligence within the stone. Hawkeye gets fixed up with synthetic skin and Thor allows Banner and Stark time to play around with the gem before he departs to Asgard.
It’s a party at Starks, Falcon is there with War Machine and Maria Hill. Romanoff flirts with Banner and there’s a Stan “The Man” Lee cameo included. Meanwhile, the mind gem entity overpowers Jarvis and starts making his own body. It taps into Starks project Ultron – an idea of his to create a mission keeping force powered by Artificial intelligence.
While the team take turns at trying to lift Thors hammer, Ultron arrives unannounced causing mayhem. He and his robot army escape, leaving The Avengers to vilify Stark for going behind everyone’s back and setting off this disastrous chain of events.
The team head off to Africa in search of a racketeer (Andy Serkis) who has a sizable amount of Black market Vibranium which the teams discovers Ultron is after. They arrive but Ultron is already there working with Wanda and Pietro. Another fight ensues, Wanda uses her powers to dabble with the minds of the whole team. Once again they escape, but Banner goes into a rampage jumping to the nearest populated city reigining havok which forces Iron man to suit up into his Hulk busting armour.
The team defeated regroup to a hideout ( aka Hawkeyes crib) where they figure out the next steps with the aid of Nick Fury. They discover an ally has locked out Ultron from settling off the world’s nuclear arsenal. Avengers split up to find out what is Ultrons master plan.
Ultron has decided to upgrade himself to a new body and the team once again intercept Ultron. Wanda and Pietro swap sides after realising he intends to destroy mankind. Captain America and Hawkeye manage to capture the body and return to base.
The body is infused with the remnants of Jarvis to create the vision. The vison warns that Ultron must be stopped and he joins forces with The Avengers. Ultrons Master plan is to use the Vibranium to carve a chunk of the earth off into space and crash it back to create an extinction level event.
An all-out fight leads to casualties, Fury stepping up with a helicarrier and our heroes save the day. Old Avengers depart, new Avengers step up and we have a new era of a Shield/ Avengers taskforce to save the day.
The end Stinger, Thanos realises that if a job needs doing, it’s better to just do it yourself.
Everything that you’ll eventually find on Honest Trailers when the BluRay comes out A.K.A what’s wrong with Avengers: Age Of Ultron
IRON MEN – Why has Iron man got all these automated Ironmen? Didn’t’ he mash them up after the Ironman 3 fireworks party?
THE NON MUTANTS – Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximof and Quicksilver/ Pietro Maximoff just didn’t gel with me as characters. If Romanoff doesn’t speak with an accent why do these guys? I preferred Quicksilver in X-men Days of Future Past. I guess wearing an Adidas track outfit doesn’t make you fast.
DEATH – It wouldn’t be a Joss Whedon movie if someone didn’t die. Maybe it was Quicksilver because of X-men or the awesomeness of WB’s The Flash. Not a huge loss, the addition (and loss) of Quicksilver didn’t resonate with me. Perhaps it was because of the foreshadowing with the bullet shot by the solider a mile away. They are no longer mutants., but “enhanced” ugh.. don’t get me started on this whole awful direction of enhanceds, terrigen mists and no mutants in the MCU.
EVIL GENIUS – Stark and Banner decide to unleash AI in three days. Without consulting anybody, because Tony doesn’t want a debate. Has he not watched terminator? Read the books by Nick Bostrom or James Barrat? Hell, even this article lays out the terrible nature of AI. But nah… Stark is going to do it. Who’s his cohort? None other than Bruce Banner! I mean he’s not a person at all who understands what can happen when science goes wrong.
BAD ROBOT – The hammer lifting scene comes into play with the vision. But Isn’t he just a robot? Like Cap said if Mjölnir was in a lift it would move. Let’s place the future of the world into a machine with a gem in its forehead. Nothing bad could happen with that.
WORK THAT BODY SHOT – Odinsons jacuzzi vison. . He abandons the team to go on a vision quest. That whole subplot with Erik Selvig ( who seems fully recovered from Loki’s mind games) I’m still not sure what that was about.
FINAL LEVEL BOSS – Thankfully James Spaders voice sounds more robotic then it has done in trailers. But he’s less ruthless and hammier then a mustache twirling villain. There’s a clip where he pretends to tell Iron Man his goals and proceeds to beat the crap out of him. Ok, I get that you messed with that trope.. But then you have him put all of his eggs in one basket! He has a whole army of Ultron robots.. Why not replicate and create havok throughout the world?
If Jarvis is locking you out of nuclear power plants, physically go to a power plant and cause a meltdown or fire them off.. Create chaos! You know what The Avengers weakness is they want to save people, spread them thin and go about your business without any hindrance. You’re a fricking A.I. with the power of a billion minds and floating a rock to create an extinction level event was your master plan??!!? Yikes.
I forget here but did Ultron create a body from Vibranium or Adamantium? I’m not sure if I zoned out here. But wouldn’t you if you were an AI try and become indestructible first and foremost?
BUTLER NO MORE – Jarvis has prevent the Ultron A.I. from disseminating on the web. Wait a minute. No backups, no USB sticks, no secret programs no backup drives, no DVD Roms? Jarvis managed to stop Ultron from copying himself to prevent dying.. The very first thing an AI would do. Oh ok then.
FRANKLY MY DEAR I DON’T GIVE A DAMM! – What are Wandas abilities? I’m not entirely sure here in the MCU, mind messing powers? Telekinesis? Waving her hands and shooting red mist? I don’t’ know, did you?
THE ONE EYED MAN IS KING – Nick Fury is looking pretty haggard these days “look me in the eye Stark” we get it Fury! You wear an eyepatch! He’s hiding in the barn? Does everyone know he’s alive? I know Cap and Falcon are but was everyone else flummoxed? Couldn’t been as surprised as I was when he arrived in a fricking hellicarrier out of the blue. How odd he had one of those just lying around spare. He must have a brilliant accountant to squirrel away the cash to build and keep it hidden.
TOO MANY BLACK GUYS! – War Machine and Falcon depart after the party. Do you need some help? Nope. Bugger off! We already got too much characters. Which is weird because X-men Days of Future Past managed to deftly weave through more than a dozen heroes and I never felt short changed.
BALL AND CHAIN – Pepper Potts had more character development in the first Avengers movie then she had in the whole Iron Man trilogy.. So why does the interplay between all these characters feel so ham-fisted?. Banner and Romanoff together? (that Hulk nsfw gif was on the money! IT’S NSFW!) Hawkeye has a wife and kids? These both felt forced without any consideration.
DUCK AND COVER – In the middle of the fight for the world. Banner wants to escape with Romanoff. I mean come on! Seriously Banner? Where were you going to run to after the world is destroyed?
YOU HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR EXCEPT FEAR ITSELF – Team weaknesses Cap has a fear of what ballroom dancing? The Black Widow back story and showing her vulnerability for me has destroyed the mystery of that character. Opening up to Bruce about her sterilization made her turn from badass to just bad.
DREAM TEAM –Hawkeye is on the homestead with wife and kids.. The whole Hawkeye/ Mockingbird thing is a nonstarter. Thanks AGENTS OF SHIELD! Iron Man is off on vacation? (RDJ has to get paid!!!) I guess he abandoned his idea to save the world from planetary attacks. Who are we left with here? Scarlet witch meh. Cut price Iron Man aka War Machine, does anyone think that Don Cheadle is better than Terrence Howard at playing Rhodey. Falcon, who proved how easy it was for him to be removed from a fight when the Winter Solider ripped off his wing. Last but not least, The Vison. Who from the little I saw of him, I thought he was quite good. A huge hanger and only 4 characters hanging around in full get up. These guys are going to square up against Thanos? It’s like a Comic con gone bad.
My immediate reaction after seeing this was a sense of being underwhelmed. It’s still an enjoyable movie, there are moments, but they are few and far between. Maybe I overdosed on too many clips, maybe I fell for the Marvel Marketing hype. Maybe I wanted this to recreate the awesome feeling of the first Avengers film. The action scenes (especially at the end) feel like all the latter transformers movies rolled into one. It’s nonstop comic book stuff, maybe just a bit too much.
Regardless it’s going to be a hit Fanboys will love it, the public will lap it up. It will be another Marvel hit. For my part, I’m hoping that ANT-MAN will step up form where the Avengers left off
