KAVRE/POKHARA: As many as nine persons lost their lives in landslides across the country today.
Four persons of the same family were killed in Sindhupalchowk while three died in Parbat when landslides struck their dwellings. In Syangja, one person was buried alive while another was swept away by a swollen river.
In Sindhupalchowk, a house belonging to 70-year-old Man Bahadur Tamang in Mahankal VDC was struck by a landslide, killing his grandson Dil Bahadur, 32, Dil’s daughter Alisha, 13, and four year-old son Prashant, along with Man Bahadur himself, early this morning. Dil’s wife-Moti, 32, was critically injured in the incident and is being treated in Melamchi-based hospital, said DSP Bharat Bohora of Sindhupalchowk District Police Office.
Bohora added that with today’s deaths landslides in Sindhupalchowk have claimed 167 lives in three weeks. Five persons were killed after three houses were buried in Baramphy VDC two days ago; a couple was buried in Bansakharka VDC on August 7; 156 persons died after 50 houses were buried in a massive landslide that struck Jure in Mankha VDC on August 2.
In Parbat, three persons were killed after a house belonging to Harilal Chapagain was buried by a landslide at KushmaMunicipality this morning. The deceased have been identified as Harilal’s daughter Jamuna Paudel, 28, and her two daughters, Jenika, 7, and Jasmin, 4. Security personnel, however, rescued Harilal’s wife, Putali, from the rubble. She is receiving treatment at DistrictHospital, Parbat. Harilal was working in a paddy field when the incident occurred.
Parbat Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Gyawali, who reached the spot after the incident, said a team of Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force distributed relief materials among the survivors.
In Syangja, Hasta Kumari Budha Magar, who hails from Rolpa district and was staying in a rented house at WalingMunicipality, was swept way by the Aandhi Khola on Wednesday. Urmila Shah, 12, was also killed after her house was buried in a landslide at PutalibazaarMunicipality of the district. DSP Buddhiraj Gurung said the swollen Aandhi Khola has affected settlements in Helubazaar, Bayarghari, Bhumrebazaar and Banyatari and has destroyed paddy fields spread over hundreds of hectares in WalingMunicipality.
