Bernie Wins Time 100

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has won the TIME 100 reader poll, topping not only his rival Hillary Clinton but also a host of world leaders and cultural figures for who TIME readers think should appear on our annual list of the most influential people in the world.

Sanders finished with 3.3% of the total “yes” votes when the poll closed at midnight on Thursday, edging out the South Korean boy band Big Bang’s 2.9%, Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 2.2%, and President Obama’s 2%. Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Pope Francis and Leonardo DiCaprio round out the top 10. Clinton, Sanders’ opponent for the Democratic nomination, finished with 1% of the yes votes.

Sanders, who has long benefited from digitally active supporters, led the reader poll from the start. While he badly lags Clinton in winning the delegates needed to capture the presidential nomination, his populist rhetoric and emphasis on income inequality has allowed him to sustain a stronger-than-expected challenge to Clinton while also helping frame the debate in the Democratic contest.

A group of PhD candidates in the Indiana School of Education, known as “the great eight,” is making history. They’ve formed a sister circle and they say it’s been the key to crossing the finish line.

After beginning the program the ladies soon realized not many women of color had come before them or at least not at the same time. So they set out to change that feeling of being the odd ball out.

“We understood very early on that we had a distinction, a commonality, a thread between all of us and so we began to meet as a group,” said PhD candidate Nadrea Njoku.

The women were on different paths at different times, but cheering each other on in a field that sees less than two percent of African-American women.

“We often deal with this idea that we always have to do more. And our collective black female community here we were able to tell each other you’re enough,” said PhD candidate Jasmine Haywood.

The group was the only thing that kept them sane when the journey got tough.

“We really value the fact that we need each other to deal with emotional expression,” said PhD candidate Johari Shuck.

The group says there’s anxiety and a burden to being singled out often.

“When you’re the only or one of a handful of people of color in the classroom particularly when it comes to speaking about issues of race. You can often become the token or spokesperson,” Haywood said.

They want to send the message that this bond isn’t just about them, but for all groups who share the same feelings.

“Standing in solidarity with each other as women and as black women but also opening up a space where we’re standing in solidarity with other historically underrepresented marginalized groups in the university,” said PhD candidate Tiffany Kyser.

“If we get more images of showing us in these positive lights. Then we can truly say this is nothing special because it happens all the time. So until we get to that point we’ll be the great eight and we’ll shine that light on it,” said PhD candidate Demetrees Hutchins.

Congrats ladies!

Is Rihanna Taking Over?

Rihanna’s empire is expanding to include a complete makeup collection.

The line, called ‘Fenty Beauty by Rihanna,’ comes in collaboration with the Kendo division of LVMH and is set to arrive Fall 2017.

It’s estimated that LVMH paid as much as $10 million to make the deal.

While the company provided no other details, David Suliteanu, chief executive officer of Kendo, was in a celebratory mood. “Fenty Beauty by Rihanna is a beauty rocket ship that will appeal to a huge and diverse global audience,” he said. “We are aiming for the stars.”

That is exactly where the Rihanna brand tends to orbit.

She previously has collaborated in 2013 with MAC Cosmetics on a four-part, limited-edition RiRi Hearts MAC color cosmetics collection, and she also represented Viva Glam lipstick in 2014 to raise funds for AIDS research.

She has produced seven fragrances for Parlux Ltd. and the relationship continues. The latest one, RiRi, was launched in fall 2015. During a promotional appearance at Macy’s in Brooklyn, the star raised $46,000 in an afternoon. Although the celebrity fragrance category is decidedly on the wane, Rihanna’s star seems to burn brighter than ever.

Kendo has given Rihanna the opportunity to play a key role in the development of her brand and the longevity of a long-term relationship. The company also offers a deep bench of development talent and a global reach in distribution. In markets where there are no Sephora stores, other, suitable retailers will be found.

We can’t wait!

Chicago’s New Hang Out

Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) today is announcing the launch of McCormick Square. Chicago’s newest neighborhood, McCormick Square offers the complete event experience with exhibition, meetings and hotel space, and a new Hotel and Event Center opening in 2017 with other entertainment and tourism options under development.

“The addition of the Event Center and the Marriott Marquis Chicago, coupled with the Hyatt

Regency, McCormick Place, and the exciting tourist attractions planned nearby, McCormick

Square is becoming a destination rather than just a building,” said Healey.

These enhancements continue to build upon the current offerings on campus. With the

combination of two hotels and an event center, McCormick Place is now able to book events

and shows that weren’t previously possible.

“As McCormick Square continues to grow and expand, it will be a boon for our neighborhood,

Chicago, and Illinois overall,” said Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd Ward. “This new rebranding will further

energize the ongoing revitalization of this new neighborhood that connects with Motor Row,

the South Loop corridor, Prairie District and the expanding Bronzeville neighborhood.”

We envision the new neighborhood will continue to evolve into a much sought after destination

that will offer something for everyone,” said Healey, “With almost 3,000 jobs on campus, we

bring economic development opportunities as well as vocational training through a partnership

with the CPS Southside Occupational Academy. The McCormick Place Rooftop Garden provides

sustainable local agriculture producing seasonal harvest that yields 8,000 pounds of vegetables

annually, and we are thrilled to continue to partner with the South Loop Farmer’s Market this

summer.”

RIP DOUG BANKS

Doug Banks, who was a radio host at several stations, including Chicago’s V103 and WGCI, and appeared on ABC7’s ”190 North,” has died from complications with diabetes. He was 57.

Born in Philadelphia, Banks hosted radio shows at stations in L.A., San Francisco, Las Vegas, Detroit and finally V103, his website says, before signing on to do a nationally syndicated show. His show airs on V103 from 2-6 p.m. on weekdays.

Banks began his broadcasting career on his high school’s radio station in Detroit, Michigan. He then moved on to the big time in Motor City radio. Leaving Detroit, Doug became a hit on stations in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Chicago had him from 1986 – 1994 both at WVAZ and WGCI.

“I approached Doug Banks to get him to work for me,” said Marv Dyson, retired radio executive for both stations. “And I had Tom Joyner in the morning and Doug in the afternoon, and it took off and they were known as the Turntable Brothers, and we did a lot of TV commercials and all that, and the station was no. 1 in the market for too many years to count.”

Then ABC Radio Network offered Banks the opportunity to do a nationally syndicated show and Banks’ reputation as a radio icon took off. His talent and personality were too big to ignore, and soon he joined WLS-TV as the host of “190 North,” as well as appearing on the New Year’s Eve broadcasts and coverage of the annual Bud Billiken Parade.

Banks took a hiatus from his show over the winter, returning in February sounding optimistic for the future.

Banks is survived by two college aged daughters and two adult children.
