Recent Trends
“The Ultra short throw/short throw market size has been consistently increasing year on year and the same is taking over the Electronic Whiteboard market. Hitachi is the pioneer in introducing ultra-short throw and today dominates the market in India. Another trend that we are noticing is the growth of the high end segment (5000 lumens and above). Hitachi also has a strong presence in this niche market segment,” said, Tarun Jain, Country Head India, Hitachi.

Projectors with perfect sound upkeep are popular, due to the trend of using media players, for home entertainment or business presentation,” said, Pradeep of ViewSonic India.
“Apart from being used for projecting data, consumers are now using it to project movies, videos and sports as well. Today, it is not just the metro cities which offer large scope for the projector market. With growth in demand is also being witnessed in the upcountry markets. XGA projectors are now on par with SVGA projectors which show that India is a very discerning market. Young consumers are more inclined to purchase high-end products like video projectors (1080p segment) to have their own movie screening experience in a special home theatre room. With the latest HD and short throw projectors, home entertainment is a fast growing segment. 3D projectors are also making this category more attractive due to an increase in 3D gaming and entertainment in India. ITeS sector has emerged as a major demand source for Projectors as they conduct regular training programs and frequent business presentations,” said, Rajendran of Acer India.
“The industry is under-going a major transformation by moving their focus from technology-driven business to consumer-driven business. This is in-line with the Tech-savvy consumers who prefer high-quality optics such as high-definition models and large-format wide screens,” added, Vishal of Panasonic India.
“Projectors are still used mainly by businesses and educational institutions in India. As we all know with the emergence of the smart class concept Interactivity has become an integral part of the education industry so they are inclined towards interactive projectors more than the normal multimedia projectors. But the direct consumer focus now a day’s shifting towards the use of projector to have a real theatre feel at the luxury of their homes,” said, Joy of Boxlight India.
“Today customers are not using projectors just for official use, the interest in new level of projectors have changed the customers mind-set to use it at home, office, school for leisure, work, studies, and so-on. This new change in users is giving a new picture to the projectors trend in India. With increasing popularity of watching sports on a large screen, many consumers have started purchasing projectors specifically for enjoying a game of cricket or football with friends and family. In fact, young consumers are more inclined to purchase high-end products like video projectors to have their own movie screening experience in a special home theatre room. 3D projectors are also making this category more attractive due to an increase in 3D gaming and entertainment in India. The expansion of digital learning in private and government schools will be the strongest push for the growth of projector market in India. The State/ Central governments are putting lot of efforts to convert conventional class rooms to digital so that the education can be simpler and easier. This means a rapid increase the projector sales in India,” concluded, Manoj of Ricoh India.
Key Areas of Technical Developments
Today’s projectors are based on one of four imaging technologies: DLP, LCD, LCOS, and laser raster. Most manufacturers are working on increasing the lumens of the projector. They are also planning for multimedia interface by installing flexible features such as Auto keystones, Corner Fit etc. Most important, users can display any video source, including HDMI v1.4a and VGA. They will be amazed with the life-like images exploding off their home theater screen. Basically, a DLP projector has the capability to easily show any 3D content on the big screen.
“Acer projectors equipped with DLP technology produce incredibly high native contrast ratios and lumen output. These projectors ensure that, the presentations are clear from anywhere in the room. Most of our DLP® projectors feature BrilliantColor technology which is raising the bar in color performance and picture quality. BrilliantColor offers up to 6-color processing to boost secondary colors and deliver reliable and precise color for extended hours.DLP technology can lower the total cost of ownership over the lifetime of their projector with filter free and lamp free options. These projectors have DLP chip with a response time of 16 microseconds and it easily supports up to 120 Hz refresh rates. This delivers a precise, razor-sharp picture with no lag times between frames designed for high speed action. 1080p HD data projectors are capable of delivering data and video presentations for a display screen area 2.3 times larger than standard XGA,” said, Rajendran of Acer India.
“Technologies like Miracast, which wirelessly connects multiple devices and mirrors their display content, have seamlessly integrated projectors and monitors without the hassle of physical connections. Panasonic and noise reducibility technologies in the industry,” said, Vishal of Panasonic India.
“The ultimate goal of ours as OEM is to reduce cost of operations in order to introduce cost effective item without compromising on quality and performance. We are aiming at to provide small lighter weight projectors with the capabilities of a smart phone at affordable prices for the middle class segment yet maintaining the quality of the product. But bringing thought into reality seems difficult,” pointed out Joy of Boxlight India.
“Reducing cost of operations is the key technical aspect which every OEM is developing on. For instance, the key element in a Projector is the (mercury) lamp, – “the heart of a projector”, OEMs are coming with enhancements on how they can increase the lamp life, at the same time giving the best of performance, some of them offer 2 Eco modes, which helps in increasing the lamp life for their projectors,” said, Manoj of Ricoh India.
“Projectors are getting more advanced in terms of technology so that they can integrate seamlessly with other IT/AV products e.g. interactive collaboration in video conferencing, HD-Base-T signal transmission for long distance application and Mobile High Definition link (MHL) which is useful for playing content from smart device. Also, there are changes underway with regard to the light source. Conventional lamps are being replaced by Laser light sources which are thereby leading to longer lamp life,” said, Harish of Epson India.
“Enhancement in lifespan of the projector lamp has been a key focus and a big user benefit focused development which has happened in the recent past. BenQ’s entire range of entry &mid level projectors now comes with lamplife of up to 10,000 hrs. In addition to that, technological advancements have helped BenQ to bring down its replacement projectors lamp cost below Rs 10,000 for the end customers for most of the models. This has significantly brought down the running cost of projectors for all users. With the constant rise in the resolution of the available content, there has been a demand generated for color accuracy and image perfection in the projection. BenQ is coming up with a new home entertainment projector W3000 with 6X RGBRGB Color Wheel that delivers Rec. 709 HDTV Standard for Cinematic Color with REC709 color standards. It reproduces the same color which has been captured at the time of production. Another major technical development is extreme ultra short throw projectors for smaller classrooms and meeting rooms,” claimed, Rajeev of BenQ India.
“Wi-Fi solution integration, WUXGA resolution and HDBasedT are the key developments in this space,” said, Pradeep of ViewSonic India.
According to Tarun of Hitachi India, the key area of technical developments in this category are Ease of opration: With more gadgets are now available as hand held devices, information sharing from the hand held devices like mobile Phone , tabs , or any wireless is an important feature , which is being looked by all segment of customers. Hitachi has all their value for money category machines enabled with wireless ready and also iOS connectivity. The range is available from 2700 lumens to 13000 lumens and resolution ranging from XGA –WUXGA , all segment users enjoy these advantages Another thing is Low cost of Ownership :-Is an another important area , where Hitachi is innovating products to become a leader . After careful evaluation of the SSL technology, Hitachi has recently showcased the Laser Projectors at Infocomm India 2015 and the Remote management: – As the projectors are deployed by customers at various geographical locations within a compound/city, a remote management on the status of these projectors which will help scheduling maintenance and consumables re-ordering. Hitachi has network software which are user friendly, using the remote management software, the administrators get a routine report on the usage and other pre-decided parameters and also e-mail alerts can be sent to notify administrators when reactive and routine maintenance is necessary. All Hitachi Value for money range projectors have this facility for network management and these are available at free of cost to customers.
Market Opportunities and Threats
The demand growth in the home segment is one of the biggest opportunities for us. Also, the rise in the government fund flow and initiative towards the digital India campaign is a big business opportunity for us since it has been majorly untapped especially in the government education segment.
“The drop in the prices of the commercial panels is one of the threat projector brands are facing since it’s a direct competitor to the projector segment. To combat the same, BenQ is now launching a range of interactive flat panels with sizes from 65” to up to 84” with full HD upto4K2K ( ultra HD resolution) along with eye care features targeting towards both education as well as the corporate segment. The segment for television market is big and even if 1% of TV market size of 1.1 cr translates into home segment projectors, it will lead to huge conversions and diversification. It will increase the projector market by additional lakh customer base which will grow projector market by 50%,” said, Rajeev of BenQ India.
“There is an enormous opportunity still waiting to be tapped in the Home theatre projector segment. This will see growth in the years ahead. As far as threats are concerned there has been a talk in the industry that Flat Panel Displays has been replaced by projectors, but the fact is that only small meeting rooms (4 – 6 Seaters with space constraints) are being considered for Flat Panel Displays (50” Display) otherwise projectors are still the major product for large screen solutions,” said, Harish of Epson India.
“The market has potential growing at a healthy pace and brands which are with good user friendly features are able to grow well. The growth is facing a temporarily slow down due to the rupee weakening and also lots of Govt projects are awaiting their funding. The segment of Education and entertainment still continues to grow at the expected levels. The major concern seen is high operational cost and reducing margins due to the $ values,” added, Tarun of Hitachi India.
“Demand for projectors has been increased from home entertainment to Enterprise necessity. Projector market is growing significantly in all these segments and a drastic need has formed in education sector, especially in Government Colleges. This is the growing opportunity for all Projector Vendors. Threats for Projector Vendors are uneven VAT structure for different provinces and custom Duty structures which is confusing for our partners,” pointed out Pradeep of ViewSonic India.
“The education sector has become a key market for projector sales in India, further bolstered by the government’s Digital India campaign to integrate education and technology. Projectors play an indispensible role within the digitization of education, as the primary devices to deliver digital content to schools in a cost-effective, large-scale manner. Vendors are catering to the growing requirement of modern teaching aids such as smart boards and AV equipment in educational institutions. This trend has spread its influence to government schools due to increased public investment in education,” said, Vishal of Panasonic India.
“India is the biggest market today for projectors as the areas of application are increasing. There are enough places for the co-existence and every brand has certain qualities in them and specific segments they are catering and that is why they have been sustaining in India for this long. For brands like BoxLight which has certain reputation does not have the threats. We are known for our interactive products and the Institutions or the customers who have once used our product do not go for any other brand. The business for low end projectors is suffering to some extent as there are number of low grade so called projectors being sold online and in local markets which can more or less be compared with toys,” claimed, Joy of BoxLight India.
“The entry-level market consisting of both SVGA and XGA projectors is still the major contributor of revenues to all key vendors. The market in India has been growing steadily but the profits are low. Over the last few years, the education system has undergone many changes. The infrastructure for imparting education has undergone sea change and the concept of black board is almost getting obliterated. Schools and educational institutions have adopted smart class capabilities. It will be correct to say ICT is making its way to the Indian school class rooms even in Tier II and III cities. Apart from private institutions, government educational organizations are also embracing ICT. Technology is changing the way our life functions in myriad ways. In another 5 years we expect a significant growth in this particular sector. At Acer, we have a wide range of projectors to suit ICT adaptation with short throw and ultra-short throw interactive projectors which is essential for today’s interactive teaching that is undoubtedly changing the education pattern in India. Acer has over 15 different models of projectors which range between Rs.18, 000 up to Rs.1, 00,000/- and above. The volatility with Foreign Exchange rates is a growing concern for all brands. Added to this is the fact that data projectors are not treated on par with IT products for import duty resulting in higher import rates on projectors. Many vendors have been making representations to the government in this regard and rationalizing this will help make cost of ownership more reasonable,” concluded, Rajendran of Acer India.
