The man accused of killing his mother, aunt and three others in North Texas on Monday was captured on surveillance video stopping at a restaurant in the middle of the Terrell rampage.
Charles Brownlow walked into Dos Aces Mexican restaurant on U.S. 80 at 9:47 pm, according to the video.
A hostess escorted Brownlow to a table, but he declined to take a menu and walked out without ordering or even sitting down, the video shows.
"He just acted kind of weird," said manager Eric Fragoso. "She took him to the place he was going to sit at. He looked around or something, and he decided to leave."
At the time Brownlow appeared at the restaurant, he had already killed his mother and aunt, according to the police timetable.
About 12 minutes later, at 10 p.m., police got a call of shots fired in a nearby neighborhood. Nobody was hit.
At 10:27 pm, police raced to another home, where two acquaintances were found dead. Jason Wooden and Kelleye Sluder Pratt were inside the house with a 3-year-old child who was not injured.
Then, minutes later, police received yet another call of a shooting at Ali's Market, a popular convenience store on U.S. 80. Officers discovered that the clerk, 22-year-old Luis Leal, had been killed inside.
Leal recently married the mother of his 1-year-old son.
The convenience store is located just a few blocks from the restaurant where Brownlow was spotted a short time earlier.
"I think we got lucky," Fragoso said. "There were a lot of people here. I mean, on the video, you see a lot of people were coming out. So imagine if he pulled a gun out right there. He would have killed -- I'm pretty sure -- more than 20 people."
Terrell police confirmed they moved Brownlow overnight from the city jail, which is attached to the police department, for more questioning. Detectives that questioned him overnight work out of a different building from the police station.
Brownlow Charged With Captial Murder, Evading Arrest
Charles Everett Brownlow, Jr. was arraigned at 8:58 a.m. Wednesday at the Terrell Municipal Jail on one charge of capital murder and one charge of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle.
Additional charges are expected to be filed against Browlow as the investigation continues, Terrell police said.
Justice of the Peace Mike Smith allowed no bond on both charges.
Brownlow was transferred from the Terrell jail to the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center at 9:23 a.m. Wednesday.
