Don't mess with the vets.

The effects of the government shutdown are widespread, but an Honor Flight Chicago trip honoring World War II veterans will proceed as scheduled on Wednesday.

Ninety-two veterans will visit the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials in Washington D.C. Senators Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin plan to accompany them in Washington D.C. along with Illinois Congressmen Peter Roskam and Bill Foster.

In a tweet sent early Wednesday, Kirk was adamant about making sure the tour happened despite the shutdown closing several monuments at the National Mall.

"Today I'll join WWII heroes from #Illinois at the WWII Memorial. Shutdown can't stop them from seeing their memorial," he said.

A celebration is planned for Midway Airport at 8:45 p.m. when the veterans return home.

The decision to continue the trip was likely influenced by a group of veterans who were initially turned away from the closed World War II Memorial in Washington Tuesday, until a congressmen moved the barrier and let them in.
