CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD)–  One mother braved rain, wind, and flood water to get to the hospital in time for her delivery. Today, Lestlis Matthews got to take her son home from the hospital.

Matthews went into labor in the midst of Hurricane Matthew. She immediately called EMS but they warned her there would be a delay because of the rising flood waters. Matthews was not willing to risk the wait, so she started walking to the hospital on her own.

“Walking through the water was fine. Any mother will go through extraordinary measures to make sure that their child is safe and I had to to do, what I had to do,” says Matthews.

She was picked up after walking nearly five blocks.

Most of her family had evacuated, so she was alone for most of the delivery. She says she is forever grateful for the staff at MUSC who took care of her and her son.

Matthews was also born during a major hurricane. Her mother gave birth just two days before Hurricane Hugo.
