RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Volunteers and staff members of the American Red Cross in Eastern North Carolina will help thousands of people in Louisiana affected by flooding Wednesday.

Kathleen Pate is a volunteer specialist at the Red Cross Triangle Chapter. She is one of about 20 locals who have volunteered to assist with the flooding devastation happening in Louisiana.

In addition, five people will work from their homes, deploying virtually to guide families in getting Red Cross assistance by completing case work over the phone.

The American Red Cross says the flooding in Louisiana is likely the worst natural disaster since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

More than 500 disaster volunteers from all over the country are on their way to help in Louisiana.

The flooding damaged at least 40,000 homes, forcing thousands of people to seek shelter elsewhere, according to Red Cross.

They say those affected are being supported in numerous Red Cross and community shelters where they can find food and a safe place to stay.

Estimated costs of relief effort could exceed $10 million.

People can donate by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word LAFLOODS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recovery from these disasters.
