The northern third of the country remains overrun with Arctic air.

The overall pattern will keep it quite cold through the weekend, with a big warm-up next week (30s Monday, 40s Tuesday, 50s Wednesday). But it won’t last, and another cold blast will move in later next week.

As for snow, there will be some, but not much. There will be three different chances across at least parts of the area:

1. Thursday: We'll see fairly clear skies and a high around 26.

2. Late Friday/Friday night: This is the system we’ve been looking at all week. On Monday, most computer models were suggesting a significant snowfall over the area. None were pointing to a big storm. By Wednesday, most of the models came together with similar “solutions.”

This would bring light snow in late Friday into Friday night. The snow will fall into very dry air, so it may take hours to reach the ground. Once it does, it should be the fluffy type since the air is so cold. The storm causing the snow looks like it won’t strengthen until it gets too far offshore to add to the amounts. Once again, southern parts of our area should see the most snow.

Here’s our first snowfall forecast for the event (updates likely):

3. Monday/Monday night: As I mentioned earlier, we’ll be having a big warm-up early next week. But there is a chance that moisture from the next system will start moving in before we warm up enough from our Arctic chill. This could lead to a period of light snow or mixed precipitation before changing to rain. Again, it doesn’t look like we have the potential for a lot of snow anywhere in the area.
