CURCHOREM

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Luizinho Faleiro has said that during the last elections, the Congress party made mistakes in choosing the candidates but this time the mistakes will not be repeated.

“This time, 50 per cent of the candidates will be youth, and the Congress will come to power with a clear majority,” he added.

Faleiro was addressing the party workers at a meeting held at Vadem-Curdi in Sanguem on Sunday.

He further said that the general public is upset over the amendment to law wherein a coconut tree has been declassified, adding the move was carried out to facilitate setting up of a liquor factory at Amdai in Sanguem.

“If the government was interested in the welfare of Amdai residents then the said project could have been set up in an industrial estate. The Congress party is with the villagers of Amdai over the issue,” he said.

“The ban on mining has led to 22,000 trucks remaining idle. Consequently, it has led to more than one lakh people becoming unemployed. During the last assembly elections, the BJP came to power by giving false assurances to the voters,” he added.

“The BJP had assured that 50,000 jobs would be created every year, and the unemployed youth will be given Rs 4,000 a month as an unemployment allowance. But till date these assurances have not been fulfilled by the government,” he further added.

Speaking on the occasion, the former chief minister Digambar Kamat said that the Amdai villagers had no approach road to the village, adding, “the villagers had even threatened to boycott the elections. But, I went to Amdai and assured to construct a road within thirty days if voted to power. This assurance was fulfilled by the Congress government.”

“Today, the BJP MLA of Sanguem is trying to bring a liquor project to the village. But we will oppose the project tooth and nail with the support the villagers,” he said.

Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar, and Nanu Gaonkar also spoke on the occasion.

AICC general secretary Girish Chodankar, ex-MP Francis Sardinha, ex-minister Domnic Fernandes, district president Subhash Phaldessai, Pradip Naik, Nanu Gaonkar, Manohar Naik, Rajanikant Naik, Jervis Fernandes, ex-sarpanch of Vaddem, Juzelina Fernandes, Nilkanth Gawas and others were present on the dais.
