California 08/31/13 CA Dept of Fish & Wildlife: Officials have confirmed 13 mountain lion attacks on humans between the ages of 5 and 70 years from March 1986 through July 2012. Wyoming 08/30/13 Teton County: State and local officials have confirmed reports of a mountain lion sighting in west Jackson. They are attempting to trap and relocate the cat but until then a portion of the Flat Creek pathway has been closed. Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) & West Nile Virus (WNV):

Delaware 08/30/13 DE Dept of Agriculture: State officials announced today that a Kent County horse has tested positive for WNV. The horse, which is recovering well, is the state’s first confirmed equine case of WNV since 2003, said Delaware State Veterinarian Dr. Heather Hirst. “Prevention is key, and effective vaccines are available to help protect horses against these types of diseases,” said Hirst. – See http://news.delaware.gov/2013/08/30/horse-with-west-nile-virus-recovering-doing-well/

Vermont 08/30/13 VT Dept of Health: EEE has been detected in more mosquitoes from the swampy areas of Whiting, nearby Leicester, and Brandon. Officials have confirmed EEE in five mosquito collected on August 26, 27 and 28. The virus was also recently detected in mosquitoes in Sudbury, from the opposite side of the swamp from where the Brandon mosquitoes were collected. “The entire area around this swamp system appears to be a hot spot for EEE,” said Health Commissioner Harry Chen, MD. – See http://healthvermont.gov/news/2013/083013_eee_detected.aspx

Rabies:

Connecticut 08/30/13 Fairfield County: Two cases of rabies were confirmed in New Canaan this week. North Carolina 08/31/13 Cumberland County: A bat found at a home on the 500 block of Nottingham Drive, off Stacey Weaver Drive, in the College Lakes neighborhood of Fayetteville, has tested positive for rabies. Canada:

Alberta 08/29/13 AL Health Authority: A bat that bit a person in Lethbridge has tested positive for rabies. The person was trying to stop a fight between the bat and a cat.
