On just about every college and university campus, you’ll find many student organizations, social clubs, and other activities that seek to unite students and create bonds that lasts a lifetime. One of the organizations that have been created to bring forth unity, respect, leadership, understanding, and community service are Black Greek Fraternities and Sororities.
The Black Greek Fraternities and Sororities also known as the Divine Nine are:
1. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, founded 1906 (Cornell University)
2. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority founded 1908 (Howard University)
3. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, founded 1911 (Indiana University)
4. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, founded 1911 (Howard University)
5. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, founded 1913 (Howard University)
6. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, founded 1914 (Howard University)
7. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded 1920 (Howard University)
8. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, founded 1922 (Butler University)
9. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, founded 1963 (Morgan State University)
Despite what you may have heard about each of these organizations, they have done more good for their members and society as a whole than the many negative comments often uttered about them.
Mona Scott-Young is looking to add a negative stigma on these organizations. In her latest project titled, “Sorority Sisters,” Scott appears to misrepresent these organizations so much so that there is a petition seeking to remove this project before it even airs.
The reaction from what the trailer of “Sorority Sisters” showed has caused Reynoir Lewis to launch a petition on MoveOn.org. In the petition it is stated,
“Stop the spread of ignorance and stereotyping of our beloved Black Greek letter organizations. Our founders amongst EVERY organization worked extremely hard to allow us to unite and flourish not only on college campuses, but as a people well beyond our college days, and Mona Scott-Young now threatens to demolish those aims and goals we all abide by. If this show airs, we will boycott any and all advertisers affiliated with the show through commercial advertising, product placement and/or location use.”
So far, at least 20,000 people have signed the petition.
