Ruth asks…

Detox for a junk food addict?

I eat A LOT of junk food and it makes me feel sluggish, unhealthy and just sick overall. I want to make a change and eat healthy now but first I think my body may need a detox. I’ve unfortunately tried to stop eating junk food before but have failed. I’m just so addicted but this time I know I have to be more serious about it because it is effective my health!! What do you recommend is the safest and most efficient detox for me? And any other health and fitness advice for someone who is desperate to get healthy!!!

Jenny asks…

Really good vegetarian food..?

For a school project i have to go vegetarian for a week.

I’m actually very picky and i don’t know what to make for school lunch and stuff. Any ideas?

Oh and it can’t be very expensive. I have a whole foods by my house so that might help….

Yea i’ve heard of Trader Joes!

I’m allergic to nuts and peanut butter though =/

I also have a blog, but have yet to put recipes on it. They’re coming soon! Http://annandanna.blogspot.com

I’ll give you some food ideas off the top of my head. I am answering another question about veg. Recipes soo yeah…

If you don’t feel like cooking, here are some sandwich ideas:

My standard sandwich that I make for lunch:

Whole Wheat Bread

Hummus (You can use any kind, but I got the spicy red pepper kind)

Black olives, sliced (I put them on top of the hummus so that they would stick and not fall out)

Green bell peppers, sliced

Avocado, sliced thinly

A couple slices of tomatoes

Banana peppers =D

A couple slices of Tofurkey (found at health food stores)

Vegenaise (vegan mayo, the Follow Your Heart brand; you can find it at most health food stores)

And of course, there is always the basic PB&J sandwich.

I have also had almond butter and jam. It’s one of my favorites!

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches are also great, because they both give you lots of energy–perfect for studying.

I also like to slice apples thinly and add them to my peanut butter and banana sandwiches. =]

Another thing that is very easy to make is sushi.

You just need rice, nori, and filling.

Here is what I like to use for filling:

avocados

cucumbers

carrots

mushroom fried tofu

banana peppers

asperagus

sweet potato w/black olives (I season it and then mix it with olives and then pipe it from a bag to make a neat line)

You could also make pasta (whole wheat pasta noodles, tomato sauce w/veggies, sliced Tofurkey Italian style sausages).

Or you could make tofu scramble and make a sandwich using crispy French bread. It’s also good to eat it with wheat thins or crackers.

Here’s the recipe for tofu scramble: http://www.theppk.com/recipes/dbrecipes/index.php?RecipeID=110%29

It’s good that you have a Whole Foods nearby. If you’re really lazy, you could go to their freezer section and buy Amy’s organic frozen dinners. They make everything from pizza to pot pies and enchiladas. Check it out. But I don’t suggest you just eat Amy’s the whole week. Have some fun experimenting in the kitchen!

Here’s some advice: Eat a large variety of foods so that you stay healthy; make your food colorful, in other words. Don’t eat pasta/pizza allll the time. ;]

EDIT:

I’m so sorry, I didn’t see that you’re allergic to peanuts!

Well, skip the PB&J sandwich then.

Good luck with your project! What class is this for, anyway?

David asks…

could my behaviour with food be dangerous?

i have always been obsessed with weight even from the age of 8

after going to university i have put on weight and am now at a bmi of 29 which is overweight for my height

i am 5ft 7 and 190 lbs. terrible i know.

over the last month i have been even more obsessed with losing weight then ever before.

it consumes every second of my time, i’m reading other people’s pro skinny blogs, looking at thinspo and checking calorie counters. im eating 700 cals a day and moderate exercise everyday at the moment.

today though i did badly and consumed about 2300 calories. i paniced when i worked this out and made myself sick. i know that sounds bad but i felt like it was necessary.

am i too obsessed?

is this a problem?

help

vti answers:

Yes, your attitude toward food is dangerous to your health. You need to consume at least 1200 calories for your body to function per day. Eat a wide variety of food (follow food pyramid or guide) and exercise at least half an hour a day. The weight loss will not happen over night, it takes time and dedication and cutting out chocolate bars and trips to the coffee shop everyday.

If you do find you’ve consume over 2000 cals again, instead of making yourself sick, simply work out a half hour longer doing cardio activities like cycling, running or cross training.

Laura asks…

Questions about the smell of kitten food.?

My vet gave my kitten Science Diet for kittens. The food was good and all and didn’t have much of an odor. Well, my family has always fed our pets Purina. So I bought some Purina kitten chow and the food stinks, I mean really stinks. Should I change her back to Science Diet or just get used to the smell, or is there some other brand of dry kitten food you reccomend.

Um…Purina Kitten Chow is dry food. I don’t like feeding wet food to animas. That is why I am wondering why it smells so much, dry food shouldn’t stink that much.

I’ve heard about Goodlife, the problem is that the stores near me don’t sell the kitten brand of it.

vti answers:

Both Science Diet and Purina are low-quality, inferior foods that shouldn’t be fed to cats unless there is absolutely no alternative but starvation.

To literally answer your question, I’d just stick with the Purina. I believe it’s less expensive, and there’s no point in paying more for the same crappy food.

Unless you feed a raw meat diet, canned food is the only way to go for optimum health and longevity.

It’s true that the brands of canned food you get at the grocery store will stink, as will any brand that contains fish. But if you buy good food there isn’t much odor.

If you’re absolutely unwilling to feed your cat canned food, then at least feed it a better dry food. This includes brands such as Wellness Core, Nature’s Variety Instincts and Innova Evo. These three are grainless. There are other brands in the What to feed link below.

You don’t have to feed your kitten “kitten” food. The main difference between “kitten” food and “adult” food is that the kibble bits are smaller. Oh, and they throw in a tiny bit more protein so you’ll think you’re doing the right thing.

If you’re interested in learning more about that topic, read my blog.
