Betty asks…

What are some natural remedies for migraines?

I’m starting to get my dad’s migraines, which really sucks. He tells me to take migraine pills because they help him, but I don’t really like to take medication unless I really have to. Are there any effective natural methods for relieving migraines?

I know the difference between a migraine and a headache, and they’re definitely migraines. And I know they’re not contagious, they’re genetic.

vti answers:

Meg: try this natural migraine treatment:

The medicines prescribed by the doctors are devised only to keep the pain in check. It does not prevent a recurrence of another episode. Further, it creates a dependence on drugs that are very harmful in a long term. Natural treatment usually involves a strict discipline that need to be followed for a period of time which will result in complete prevention of migraine recurrence.

Here are some of the tips that can be followed to keep the pain at check:

1. Breathing Exercise

Breathing regulates the flow of blood and hence the oxygen supply to the brain and head region. Breathe slowly and deep so that you can focus away from the pain.

2. Head/Eye Massage

Gently massage your forehead with your fingers. Massage the acupressure points around the eye. It can offer a great relief from pain. Gently apply mild pressure and run your forefinger around the cavity of the eye.

3. Aromatherapy

Add a few teaspoons of essential oils of a preferable aroma to hot water in a bowl and take in the steam.

4. Hot and Cold Treatment

Take a towel and dip it in hot water. Gently rub and massage the painful areas with the towel. Keep the temperature of the towel to a level that feels comfortable. Some people prefer Cold water or ice cubes instead of hot water or steam. Find out what works best for you to bring you relief.

5. Relaxation Music

Choose mild instrumental music of your preference and listen to it. Also, guided relaxation tapes with a good music in the background could be used.

Natural remedies for ADD?

I have struggled with ADD my entire life.

I’ve taken several different dosages of Aderol…concerta..ect.

They worked, but the side effects are awful. I lost personality, appetite…expierienced some depression. I couldn’t sleep. And when I couldn’t sleep, they wanted to medicate THAT side effect with ridalin. I decided sophomore year in highschool i’d had enough.

and then I experienced tremendous weight gain after I got off the pills…long story short, I wouldn’t recommend behavioral meds to anyone unless it were in the worse case scenario.

I’m still having trouble focusing in class and at work.

I work at an outlet store in a tourist town, and it’s just starting spring break season today..I nearly had a mental break down today, because I had people talking on the radio in my ear, phones were ringing, new associates were asking me questions…

I just need something to calm my nerves….and help me process one thing at a time.

(I also have auditory processing disorder…to top it all off.)

I just need some sort of remedy that won’t cause me more problems than I already have.

vti answers:

The real source of your problems as you describe them is the lack of understanding of your Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), and not knowing how to avoid situations where your APD is areal problem.

APD is a listening disability, or not being able to process all that you hear, which includes speech. This makes following conversations difficult, and sometimes impossible, and problems with following verbal instructions. Stress maens that you are less able to cope with your APD.

So you could be in the wrong type of job for your APD too muchg auditory processing required.

One of the problems facing many who have APD is processing normal conversations with low levels of background noise (pink sound) what you have describes would be pure torture for me with my APD issues.

Some who have APD can sometimes be miss diangosed as having ADD or ADHD, this can happen if you are refeered to the wrong type of diagnostic consultant, or a consultant who is not aware of APD or not able to diagnose APD. Having said that it is possible to have both APD and ADHD.

For more information about APD have at the resources listed below, and you could also join the adult APD forum the OldAPDs which has now been running for over 10 years.

Natural flea remedies???

Is there a such thing as natural flea remedies for dog and cats. I dont like the idea of putting chemicals on my pets. Is there another way?

vti answers:

I went through the same dilemma as you and have tried just about everything. The first thing to tell you is that nothing natural works instantly. If you are looking for a quick solution you will not find it. However there are a few great products that you can buy that can work.

Many people find it hard to believe that changing the pets to a natural high quality food will help eliminate a flea problem, but it is the first step.

Supplements are.. Imported brewers yeast (one tablespoon per day to 50 lbs) or one teaspoon to an adult cat or small dog. Adding a chopped clove of garlic or garlic oil to the food since garlic also helps remove the threat of tapeworms.

If your pets are experiencing flea dermatitis adding Vit B1 or Oil of Evening Primrose to the diet will be beneficial.

Citrus Oil is an excellent product and can be mixed in water and a spray bottle with a squirt on the dog or cat every now and again. (You can make your own with Oranges, Lemons, grapefruit etc and boil them down in a large pot). Citronella can be extremely toxic to cats and de’limonene has been found to cause nerve damage.

In your home treat places like the window sill (if you have a cat) and book cases. For your garden you can use a mixture of 1/2 and 1/2 beer and dish soap applied to the lawn with a hose sprayer. Or you can use the citrus mixture if you decide to make it yourself, or you can buy Diatomaceous Earth at the hardware store. Make sure you buy the bleached form used in swimming pool fileters – inexpensive but highly effective. – this will take about 3 weeks to be completely effective but will last a long time. Kills off all forms of flea cycle.

The only thing that works is persistance. Good luck

Natural diaper rash treatments?

My baby has a diaper rash and I’m pretty sure it’s because shes teething. Anyone have any herbal remedies for her little bottom. She’s 4 months old.

vti answers:

Natural Remedies for Diaper Rash

Using natural remedies for diaper rash, instead of using store-bought balms and ointments, can often lead to greater results and faster healing. Sometimes store-bought remedies don’t even work on your baby’s tender skin.

There are plenty of natural remedies out there to help ease your baby’s pain and discomfort.

First Things First:

First thing to do is bathe your baby in either plain warm water, or add some oatmeal to it. Once your baby is out of the bath, use a hair-dryer on its lowest heat setting and gently dry baby’s bottom. If you don’t have a hair-dryer, gently pat the bottom with a soft towel.

Then, let your baby have some diaper-free air time. Getting some air to the area is one of the most natural healing aids you can do. If your baby is not mobile, use a waterproof mat on the floor and place her there with some toys, or lay her on your chest with a towel. If mobile, you might have a harder time keeping your little one in one place, but still try to give them some air time.

If you are just changing a dirty diaper, avoid using commercial baby-wipes as they contain harsh amounts of alcohol, which can irritate baby’s skin even more. Make sure you dry the area thoroughly after cleaning, and then try to give some air time again.

Tried & Tested Natural Remedies for Diaper Rash:

Oliver Oil & Water:

Natural and healthy, olive oil has been used for centuries for all different kinds of ailments. Try whisking a tablespoon of olive oil with 5 drops of water until it forms a creamy smooth texture, then apply to baby’s clean, dry bottom.

Cod Liver Oil Capsules:

Another great natural remedy is to use cod liver oil capsules. Open the capsules and pour the oil over the affected area.

Essential Oils:

Essential Oils are wonderful products that can be used to naturally treat a number of problems. Tea tree is one of the best out there. This multi-use oil is effective against yeast, is antibacterial & anti-inflammatory and healing to wounds (vulnerary). Some others you could also try:

• Calendula – Antiseptic & Soothing

• Comfrey – Ultra Skin Healing

• Echinacea – Antibacterial

• Chamomile – Soothing & Gentle

• Lavender – Anti-Inflammatory & Gentle

• Sandalwood – Soothing & Gentle

• Myrrh – Skin Rejuvenating

When using Essential Oils in their concentrated form, you’ll need to add them to a base oil first (Olive, Jojoba or Sweet Almond work well). The oils in their natural concentrated form will be too strong for baby’s delicate skin.

You can also find plenty of natural ingredient ointments on the market that may work well for your baby, including a lot with the above Essential Oils
