E3 2013: Inside Ubisoft’s ambitious next generation exclusive The Division

By Matt Hartley

LOS ANGELES — For the second consecutive year, one of the new games earning the most buzz after being unveiled at E3 is a game that plays heavily on societal anxieties about the fragile nature of society from Ubisoft Entertainment SA.

Last year, one of the most talked about titles to be unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was Ubisoft’s Watch_Dogs, which deals with fears surrounding our surveillance culture and features a protagonist who is able to manipulate video monitoring systems and hack computer networks to become a vigilante.

On Monday, Ubisoft gave the world its first glimpse of Tom Clancy’s: The Division, an open world role playing game set against the backdrop of a societal collapse in North America caused by a biological pandemic.

Produced by Ubisoft’s Swedish subsidiary Ubisoft Massive (formerly Massive Entertainment) and expected to arrive next year, The Division has the potential to be one of the company’s flagship titles for the next generation of high end video game consoles — namely Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One — which are due to be released later this year.
