ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Labrador’s Innu Nation says it will continue to hunt caribou despite warnings from the provincial government about rapidly declining herd numbers.
A hunting ban remains in effect with new numbers issued last week showing the Red Wine herd is down to about 20 animals.
In 2013 the George River herd was less than 20,000.
Deputy chief Simeon Tshakapesh says hunting isn’t to blame.
He says Innu elders preach conservation and hunters only take what they need.
Tshakapesh says the province should acknowledge its part in the declining herd by allowing mega projects.
