Where is it?
Aberdovey is located within the Snowdonia National Park between the Cambrian mountain range and the shore.
Reason for going?
This was one of the most anticipated courses on our golf trip to Wales, and we could not go to Wales without popping in for a game at Aberdovey.
What to expect
A classic out and back links course that runs parallel to the sea and Cambrian Coast Line.
The course itself is steeped in history having hosted some top events, most recently The Welsh Seniors’ Championship in June 2016.
Three of the most legendary golf course architects, Harry Colt, James Braid and Herbert Fowler have all had an influence on the fantastic golf course at Aberdovey.
It is definitely a must play course, that you need to take the time to go and visit.
My best bit
We were fortunate enough to be at Aberdovey for the opening of their new 12th hole, following the hole previously been washed away into the sea.
This par 3 is the shortest hole on the course measuring at just 149 yards, but don’t be fooled by the length of this spectacular hole.
Hitting towards an impressive raised green where the only safe place is the dance-floor.
Go right, and you will see yourself on the beach, and go left and you ball will roll down into oblivion, leaving a blind pitch up the sheer embankment with no clear view of the pin.
What to look out for
The home 4-hole stretch is one of the finest run of holes I have played, with each hole running alongside the corresponding railway line.
Any stray shots could see your ball end up in Shrewsbury, some 67 miles away.
When I go back…
I will make sure to have a pint on the balcony overlooking the sea and the fantastic course that is Aberdovey, while just watching time go by in a great part of the world.
