Those filing their 2015 income taxes had extra time to file this year.
Still, if the April 18 filing deadline feels as though it came too early, there are some U.S. Postal Service locations that will be open late for last-minute filers.
If you’re in Naples, however, be prepared to make an extra drive.
With the rise of e-filing tax returns, over 90 percent of all tax returns filed in 2015 were done electronically, the days of Post Offices open until midnight to ensure that tax returns would have the all-important postmark date at the deadline have passed on.
No locations in Collier County will be open past 5:00 p.m., and just three in Lee County will be.
The latest in the area is in Cape Coral, at 1030 Southeast 9th Ave, and will stay open until 6:30 p.m. Another Cape Coral post office, on 4722 Southeast 17th Ave, and the post office at Page Field, will stay open until 5:30 p.m.
Typically, the filing deadline for income taxes is on April 15, but it falls to the following Monday if the 15th is on a weekend. April 15 is on a Friday this year, but an official holiday in Washington D.C, Emancipation Day, is on a Saturday. When Emancipation Day, commemorating the signing of the Emancipation Act by President Abraham Lincoln, is on a weekend, it is observed on the nearest weekday, Friday in this case. Since city employees have the day off, the IRS moved their filing deadline to Monday.
E-filing can still be done until the deadline.
