Reporting to the Director of Communications, we seek a Media Relations Manager to join our team. This position will be located in our New York City office.

As the Media Relations Manager, you will be a member of the communications team and will create media communications plans, respond to media inquiries, develop messaging, and write/edit communications across several regions/offices and digital platforms. This position cultivates ongoing relationships with the media, conducts media training for staff, and develops integrated social media plans and manages their execution. The candidate must be a media-savvy, team-oriented professional with solid writing, relationship building and pitching skills.

Responsibilities Include:

Create a comprehensive media strategy that includes developing results-driven campaigns that integrate online and offline channels to meet visibility and advocacy goals

Develop and manage national and international media relationships (including social media) and lead outreach efforts to establish PHR as a key international expert source on human rights issues

Manage simultaneous press events around the globe

Provide coaching and interview prep for PHR staff and volunteer physicians

Own and run campaigns to develop brand awareness of PHR and its volunteer physicians and staff

Write, edit, and package persuasive and newsworthy content about PHR that can be easily repurposed by you or others on the communications team into blog posts, Tweets, comments, traditional press releases, opinion pieces, and talking points

Maintain and utilize media clip service to monitor daily news coverage and propose responses, releases, interviews, or new media tactics based on that coverage

Serve as lead rapid responder on breaking news and opportunities

Recruit and manage media relations interns

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree

5-7 years experience in media relations and communications

Familiarity with Vocus, Cision, or comparable media database

Interest and enthusiasm for working with media professionals, including strong pitching and cold calling skills

Demonstrated ability as a spokesperson with the media with a proven record of performance in the national and federal media environments

Demonstrated placement in national media of organization-generated story ideas

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to translate complex issues into key points for target audiences across varied communications platforms

Demonstrated project management experience

Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and handle high-pressure situations, as well as plan and execute longer-term projects

A proactive attitude and strong work ethic, with the ability to identify problems and develop solutions

The ability to leverage a network of proven and established press and media contacts is key to the overall success of this position; solid professional reputation and credibility within the PR community is a must

Familiarity with and interest in human rights
