Who We Are: At School-to-School International (STS), we aim to improve the quality of elementary education in developing countries through four main objectives:****

Providing our Whole Child model of support to schools and communities in developing countries so that all children have an opportunity to learn well;

Raising awareness about the conditions of children's lives in other parts of the world;

Developing the interest and capacity on the part of participating schools, communities and governments to expand and institutionalize the STS model in their countries; and

Providing services to governments and institutional clients to improve the quality of their education systems through support for teacher training, curriculum development, program evaluations, and assessment of student learning.

STS partners with individuals, government ministries, non-governmental organizations, private foundations, and research institutions to improve children's education. Currently, we have projects in 12 countries across Africa and Asia.

Position Description: This position is perfect for a mid-career business development professional looking to undertake a leadership role in a dynamic and growing organization. Qualified candidates will have a passion for building strong networks across the leading education and evaluation implementers, donors, local partners and governments. The Business Development Director (BDD) will combine skills and experience in business development, marketing, strategic partnerships and networking to improve the programs and maturation of STS. The role of the BDD is to manage business development and fundraising for STS. The BDD will be responsible for guiding STS’ future and direction by researching, pursuing, winning, and leveraging new resources, business prospects and partnerships from multiple sources in both global and U.S. markets. Level of Effort will be split across three core job areas: business development (50%) and partnership development (30%) and marketing and fundraising (20%).

Business Development—the BDD will identify and pursue international partnerships and contracts while managing relationships with current and potential partners; collaborate closely with stakeholders to align STS’s business development strategies with donors’ strategic priorities related to programs and impact; identify opportunities for partnerships and program growth while winning support from multi-lateral donors, foundations and government entities through grants and contracts; and work closely with STS’ technical and programmatic staff to ensure high quality project designs that use cutting edge approaches to achieve impact and results.

Partnership Development—the BDD will improve STS’ capabilities to engage with the private, public and government sectors; develop standards to improve effectiveness of private sector engagement; identify and approach new corporate partners and build relationships with them; and direct the expansion of STS’ existing corporate partnerships and multi-stakeholder alliances.

Marketing and Fundraising—the BDD will be responsible for shaping the global image of STS and will management outside communications with donors, clients and investors while also representing the organization at national and international conferences, as necessary. In coordination with the board, Executive Director and staff, the BDD will also develop and execute a fundraising plan that reaches outside of grants, which may include galas, campaigns, and individual gifts acquisition.

Roles and Responsibilities:

In addition to the duties listed under the position description, the qualified individual will also:

Secure multi-year evaluation contracts and education/health awards

Conduct new business services including research, costing, bid tracking and proposal development

Work with STS’ board of directors to develop and implement long-term business, fundraising and marketing strategies

Represent STS at events and at international development conferences as necessary

Conduct country-specific research on USG projects and the extant funding landscape

Work with the U.S. Government and other bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors, including maintaining communications, relationships and program reports

Manage a portfolio of new business prospects, institutional donors and individual philanthropists

Develop a knowledge and understanding of STS’ programs/strategies and the wider international development sector to communicate and negotiate authoritatively with senior stakeholders

Maintain relations with corporate partners, including executives from major institutional funders, multinational companies and global networks in the sector

Create and execute any necessary short- and long-term fundraising events and campaigns

Facilitate institutional donor identification, targeting relationship cultivation and stewardship

Conduct full bid processes including executing teaming strategies, positioning within bid teams, and writing quality proposals

Qualifications:

Masters degree or equivalent with a minimum of 7 years of work experience in business development or fundraising in the international sector, including a knowledge of funding mechanisms, key players and international and national donors

International education experience, including development work for an education nonprofit, a plus

Minimum of five years of experience in managing the development of technical proposals for large funding agencies active in international development, preferably in international education

Candidates with five or more years in business development are strongly preferred

Overseas experience strongly preferred

Desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment and to establish new and successful systems

Good understanding of the major funding networks and platforms, including experience writing proposals for USAID, DFID, Global Fund, AusAID and large foundations, is strongly preferred

Experience with multi-lateral and/or foundation prospecting and capture

Minimum of at least two years of bid and staff management experience required

Demonstrated success at developing and implementing strategic fundraising plans
