The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) works to broaden access to life-saving therapy for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria patients in the poorest parts of the world.  CHAI approaches health access challenges with simultaneous and intensive engagement on both the demand and supply sides of the market. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective national and sub-national level management.

The MDR-TB Access team focuses on addressing both the supply-side and demand-side barriers to ensure the sustainable supply of second-line TB drugs. Of the estimated 440,000 annual incident cases of Multiple Drug Resistant TB (MDR TB) world-wide, less than 10% are put on any kind of treatment and less than 5% are treated in internationally qualified public sector programs. This gap in treatment results in high rates of mortality among infected patients, and perpetuates growing rates of infection and resistance.

The Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) in India is widely acknowledged as one of the most successful public health programmes in India and has an ambitious vision of providing universal access to TB care. The MDR-TB Access team supports the Central TB Division (CTD) in addressing myriad challenges in realizing this vision.
