One of the things you’ll always hear about Nantucket, is the concept of community and how strong it is on our little Grey Lady. And as we veer towards the end of our summer season, here are Nine Names to note on Nantucket and the wonderful, generous and inspiring things that these people are doing on ACK over the past and next few weeks.
Jim Pignato + Jill Roethke
Our Island. Our Family. Our Swim. Our Cause
Jim + Jill presenting the 2015 Swim Across America Nantucket donations to PASCON’S Charlene Thurston + Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s president and CEO Margot Hartmann
One of the Nantucket events that I always look forward to is Swim Across America. Coming at us during the last week of August, the swim is a beautiful reminder of summer and the strong power of fundraising and care for cancer patients and PASCON out here on ACK. To that, I’m grateful for Jim Pignato and Jill Roethke… life long swimmers and the event cochairs of SAA Nantucket.
After participating in the 2012 SAA 25th anniversary swim, they decided that they would work together with Swim Across America, Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket to bring the Swim back to Nantucket on an annual basis for on-island cancer care. With their swimming background, as well as close cancer ties in their families, it was a natural fit for them to get involved with SAA. Last year, the event raised over $300,000 and this year the bar is set even higher at $375,000… and every dollar stays local!

I love watching groups of Nantucket friends and businessowners, both seasonal and year round, come together for worthy causes… and so it is with great pride to see The Friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital out there as the next generation of leaders and donors who respect the 100 year history of NCH and also bring new insights to help guide the hospital into the future. Acting as ambassadors, The Friends of NCH engage young island residents, seasonal residents, and visitors alike by spreading awareness about the vital role Nantucket Cottage Hospital plays in supporting the Nantucket community. Right now, this committee is on their way to raise $1 million for the island’s new facility.
And for those on island this Saturday, join their Apres Beach Party at Jetties from 5pm to 7pm with the $100 ticket proceeds all going back to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. We hear there is a SERIOUS raffle that you don’t want to miss out on and this is a great time to get together before the summer comes to an end!

Gwenn + Mark Snider
Celebrating 125 years of the Nantucket Hotel!
It’s been a pleasure getting to know Gwenn and Mark Snider and experiencing first hand what their family owned Nantucket Hotel has done to help our island. From their “islanders stay for free” specials, to their retreat weekends with island author Elin Hilderbrand, to the fact that they are the only hotel and resort that keeps its lights on year round, (and has festive balls in both July and January!)… it’s safe to say we can always find a reason to toast with these two. And in 2016, Mark and Gwenn are in their 5th season of the Nantucket Hotel AND celebrating 125 years of the Nantucket Hotel’s existence, as this grand and historic hotel was originally built in 1891 and completely renovated with the Sniders in 2012! Take note… While the exterior is classic Nantucket, the interior is everything you would expect from a new hotel meeting the needs of today’s travelers- along with resort services and an ideal space for families and couples.
This Saturday, Mark and Gwenn are hosting their anniversary gala with a fabulous party in collaboration with Nantucket Ballroom. While the event is sold out, you can see the trailer for the Nantucket Ballroom dancing below!

Bruce & Elisabeth Percelay
The island family that donated a $10 million matching gift to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital to help continue the new Hospital’s Fundraising Momentum!
News of this extraordinary donation was announced at the 2016 Boston Pops on Nantucket. And the details are… “In a major step toward making the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital a reality, longtime island resident Bruce Percelay and his wife Elisabeth have committed a $10 million matching gift toward the hospital’s capital campaign. This transformational matching gift is intended to inspire others to join the capital campaign and move the hospital closer toward its dynamic new facility, and also secure the future of the organization by taking the campaign a step further to complete the hospital campus with new housing. It represents the largest family gift in the island’s history. By matching the gifts of others, the Percelays have created the momentum to address three urgent issues facing the hospital: the construction of its new facility; hospital housing; and sustaining its critical programs including emergency and primary care, hospitalist services, and behavioral health.” Click below to learn how you can donate, too!
