The controversial saying credited to the General Overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, might have been never said.
It should be recalled that the Winners Chapel founder was said to have claimed during the January 25 service that the gate of hell will be opened on those who vote President Goodluck Jonathan out in the February elections. The statement immediately went viral in the social media, triggering hundreds of reactions.
But what exactly did Oyedepo say during the service? Did he really made any reference to “hell” in his speech?

Oyedepo:
To the glory of God, we have a very special guest in our midst, the president of the Federal republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Give the lord a big hand. Your excellency, you are welcome. Please be seated; get seated everyone. Amen. In the course of this service, he will be bringing us special greetings. Expect, today, to return with whatever desires you came back with, in Jesus name.

Once again, with a big clap offering, welcome Mr. President to our midst… I will like this congregation in this third service to join me and receive on this altar, for a word of greatness, a blessing from the father of the nation, to this congregation. Please join me welcome Mr. President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, as he brings us a word from the lord.
Jonathan:
Thank you, my brethren. Please be seated. My Bishop, thank you so much and our mummy, Mama Faith Oyedopo, I have to thank you so much and other clergy men and women here with us, my brethren. First, let me thank God that I’m here with you today. I’ve been wanting to join you in one of your special programmes, but it has not been possible because of the circumstances of my office.
Today, I’m quite happy that something brought us to Lagos since yesterday; we’ll leave tonight. And I said that at least, I must be with you today. First, to use this platform to sincerely thank you all and indeed the Nigerian Christians for your persistent prayers for the nation.
Of course everybody knows what we are passing through as a nation. We try to imbibe cultures that are alien to Nigeria; we imitate others, especially when it has to be something that is negative, and the country is passing through some challenges of insecurity. It could have been worse than that; it could have been worse than what we are seeing today if you’ve not been praying. With your prayers and the commitment of government, we will surely overcome it. Let me specially thank our leader, father, our bishop, for his commitment to the work of God, and his commitment to bringing up the young ones. This is one church that has established two universities, which is not easy. Education is the key, maybe because of my own background.

I came from a very humble background, and I say if I didn’t go to school I wouldn’t have been here with you today. So my emphasis is that for you to liberate people, you must create opportunities platforms, for them to be educated, and this church has been doing wonderfully well in that direction. So I have to commend you; I thank you and use this opportunity to also continue to plead with you to do what you have been doing wonderfully well, that is to continue to pray for the country.
Pray for the nation and pray for the successful elections that will come up next month. A number of people are predicting quite a number of things, but I know that God almighty has the control of our lives. God will make sure that we will conduct our elections peacefully and this country will continue to move to the direction we want. My brothers and sisters, I appreciate what you have been doing. I wouldn’t want to say much so that they would not say I come here to campaign.
But I sincerely appreciate the good work you have been doing; and with your good work, with your prayers, as a nation, we will continue to grow from strength to strength. I thank you all.
Oyedepo:
Before we get into the message this morning, I like us to do what the Bible enjoins us to do in 1 Timothy Chapter 2 and Verse One. ‘I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; and on the priority list is for kings, and for them all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.’
I only had an idea that we would be privileged to have Mr. President today, yesterday. It wasn’t there on Friday night when we were here for one night with the king, and so we are going to be praying for our president. Let prayers and supplications and intercessions be made for all men, first of all for kings and those that are in authority that we may live a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. And after that I would do what the priests are asked to do; he said speak to Aaron that after this manner shall yea bless the children of Israel. I proclaim yea blessings as a priest of God over our president and the blessings will answer in the name of Jesus Christ.
In Numbers Chapter 6 and Verse 23, the Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, the LORD bless thee, and keep thee: the Lord makes his face to shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee and give thee peace.’ When that blessing comes and stays, something happens. You know, the generation of the old Testament knew the value of blessings. They would even cry to get it. I like us to all rise and lift our president up to God, intercede for him; everything you desire to see God bring about in his life, bring about in our nation, begin to pray that over him right now. We make intercession for kings and those that are in authority that we may live a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. Lord we pray for our president, for unusual release of grace to match the demands of his office. Oh, my God, release your unusual grace in increasing dimension to match the demands of his office. Lord, lift up your countenance upon him; cause your face to shine upon him.
Lord, grant him the desires of his heart. Lord, under him, grant Nigeria peace. Under him, grant Nigeria more progress. Under him, grant Nigeria greater advancement. Lord we bless him in the name of the Lord today, and we pray that these blessing remain upon him. Thank you, father, In Jesus precious name we have prayed. This entire church proclaims our President blessed today (church shouts amen), blessed with divine wisdom to match the demands of his office (church shouts amen), blessed with peace to see the miraculous in his life (church shouts amen), blessed with grace that would advance his cause in our nation (Church shouts Amen). Every time we pray here, God answers.
He said wherever two or three are gathered in my name, I would be in the midst of them. And when we agree concerning anything, he said it is done for us. Therefore, in the name of Jesus, our president is blessed (church shouts amen). His going out is blessed, his coming in is blessed. The will of God is blessed in his life (Church shouts amen). Thank you father, blessed be your name in Jesus precious name. Give the Lord a big hand and please you may be seated…
More proof:
The Cable spoke with 7 members of the church present at the service. All of them confirmed that nothing of the kind was said by Bishop Oyedepo adding that the clergyman only urged people to pray for Jonathan.

The church officials when contacted by the phone, also dismissed the rumours claiming that the information had been made up by the media.
Nigerian Bulletin carried out their own investigation and questioned other church members, none of whom heard Oyedepo’s alleged “hell statement”.
