NagpurVision – The first-ever railway budget presented by the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday was applauded by the BJP members of parliament from Vidarbha region who described it is as forward-looking and a right catalyst for developmental agenda of the government at the Centre.

However, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and ex-MP Vilas Muttemwar said the budget presented by railway minister Sadanand Gowda was disappointing and did not match high expectations that Modi had raised in his election campaign. BJP MPs from the region were happy about proposals to provide new trains to Pune, Vijayawada and Delhi from Nagpur and a new train between Kazipet and Mumbai that would pass through Wardha and Ballarshah.

City MP and Union minister Nitin Gadkari was too busy in official meetings to offer any comments of the rail budget but it was evident from Gowda’s repeated mention of Nagpur in his budget speech that the saffron party had given due weightage to Gadkari’s turf which also houses the RSS headquarters.

“The rail budget is all-encompassing and does not ignore any part of the country, be it north-east or south India. Every region has been taken care of. It is specially significant for Maharashtra as it proposes to provide several new trains to Nagpur, rakes for Mumbai locals, first-ever bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and high speed trains connecting Nagpur with Secunderabad and Bilaspur,” said Chandrapur MP Hansraj Ahir.

He is also enthused as his constituency has got attention by way of sanction for surveys for rail lines between Warora-Umred and second line between Chandrapur-Nagbhid while the newly planned AC train between Vijayawada and Delhi would also pass through his constituency. Wardha MP Ramdas Tadas hailed the rail budget for the new facilities, stress on cleanliness and provision to recruit 4,000 women police personnel by railways to ensure security of women passengers.

Bhandara-Gondia MP Nana Patole was excited about the proposals to provide high-tech facilities like Wi-Fi at designated rail stations and in trains, plans to revamp the railway official structure to provide impetus to country’s prime mover and mass transporter.

Muttemwar said it was ?totally disappointing’. “The UPA government had planned most of the proposals like bullet trains and freight corridor. The Modi government is trying to take credit for it,” he said. He was upset the plan to upgrade Nagpur railway station to ?world class’ status found no mention by Gowda. “Gadkari had during his election campaign promised to make the city a railway hub but apparently the rail budget has made no provision for that,” said Muttemwar.

The move to run two high speed trains on Nagpur-Bilaspur and Nagpur-Secunderabad routes and two AC trains between Nagpur-Amritsar and Nagpur-Pune is good, apart from routing Hapa-Bilaspur train through the city. But, at the same time, pre-budget hike in fares were uncalled for
