Pathfinder, a popular pen-and-paper role-playing game based on the Open Gaming Licence on which the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) was built, will be coming to life in video games thanks to a licencing agreement between Paizo Inc., publisher of Pathfinder, and Obsidian Entertainment.
Best known for their work in others franchises such as Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights II, and much wider experience with the D&D franchise, Obsidian’s first project with the franchise will — rather oddly — not be a traditional RPG in the manner of their other massive project, Pillars of Eternity, but instead an adaptation of the card-based Pathfinder Adventure Game for tablets. In the game, players choose popular character types, such as a cleric or warrior, who come with a customisable deck of cards.

This isn’t Pathfinder‘s only foray into the digital realm, however. Paizo has been developing an MMO based on the Pathfinder setting under the company Goblinworks. Currently in alpha, the game has been developed since the beginning of last year. So the role-playing game development veterans build the mobile-based card game while relative newcomers to computer RPGS develop the full-on MMO? Alrighty then.
The licence will, however, allow for other digital projects in the future (Rise of the Runelords, anyone?), so let’s cross our fingers and hope the die rolls in our favour.
