He also founded his first web startup (an online shirt tailor), and later setup a vintage motorcycle restoration factory in Beijing. Having always struggled to learn languages at school, Ben initially found learning Chinese very hard going indeed. To help himself to make sense of Chinese characters, he began to develop a library of visual mnemonics that linked the shape of each character to their meaning. This proved to be a huge breakthrough and very soon he was starting to read Chinese newspapers. The materials that Ben made to teach himself Chinese because the foundations of the Memrise learning platform and are now some of the most widely used Chinese learning materials in the world. Over the past 3 years Memrise has grown to a community of more than 1.3m students learning nearly 500 languages.
