Astronomers have found a new type of hot blue star in a distant cluster, which regularly changes in brightness. The discovery is providing new insights into the evolution of stars far bigger than the Sun.
Black hole bonanza in Andromeda galaxy
Astronomers have discovered an unprecedented number of black holes in the Andromeda Galaxy M 31. 26 stellar mass black holes were detected in the giant spiral galaxy, the largest population outside the Milky Way.
Fastest winds in the Solar System
Scientists studying the winds of the ice giants Neptune and Uranus say they’re the fastest in the solar system, but only penetrate the upper layers of atmosphere. The results help place Earth and its weather patterns into a broader context and raise new questions about wind generation on the planetary giants.
New planet formation puzzle
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has found what could be a planet forming 80 times further away from its host star than what the Earth is from the Sun. The new discovery poses a challenge for current theories on planetary formation.
China’s longest manned mission in orbit
Three Chinese taikonauts have entered the Tiangong-1 space module after successfully docking their Shenzhou 10 capsule with the orbitor. The 15 day mission is the longest manned flight undertaken so far in China’s ambitious space program.
