It was recently reported to us that an ugly incident that claimed the life of 3 WAEC candidates and rendered over 200 candidates injured happened in Taraba State.

At Alpha Academy, a private secondary school in Mararaba, Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, a building in which students were writing the May/June West African Examination Council School Certificate examination (WASCE) collapsed on them on Wednesday, 24th of April, 2013.

It was said that about 530 candidates were writing the WAEC May/June at the school, and most of the students complained that the building has cracks, but nothing was done until it crash on them.

Out of the over 200 candidates that were injured, about 30 of them are in critical condition at the CRCN Hospital, Takum under serious treatments.

ScDonga council chair Capt. Douglas Ndatse (rtd), who confirmed the incident, described the examination hall as a one-storey building. He said the examination was taking place upstairs.

Another survivor, simply identified as Ezekiel, said they were waiting for the Biology question paper when the building suddenly came down on them.

Ezekiel, who is seriously injured, said the incident occurred at about 6:48pm, more than three hours behind the time scheduled for the examination.

“The paper was slated for 3:30pm,” Ezekiel said, attributing the delay to officials.

May the long comfort the families of those candidates who were seriously injured in the ugly incident and may those who died in the course of the collapse rest in peace.
