Top Five Free Things to do in Myrtle Beach

One of the best things about vacationing on the Grand Strand is you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good time, as long as you know where to go. Here are the top five free things to do in the Myrtle Beach area:

The beach is the most popular free attraction on the Strand, and for good reason. Unlike some resort towns, where private beaches force guests to crowd into one public space, Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas offer free beach access on virtually every block. Pack a picnic lunch or take a romantic stroll after dinner. The beach is the best and cheapest entertainment in town.

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk in the downtown district is a 1.2-mile wooden walkway that allows guests to take a relaxing walk along the coast. The Boardwalk offers more than just a free place to sightsee. It also host free concerts and fireworks displays at Plyler Park during the summer months.

Popular entertainment complexes such as Broadway at the Beach and Market Common in Myrtle Beach, the Marshwalk in Murrells Inlet, and Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach offer a free place to window shop and people watch. Of course, it’s tempting to spend a few bucks at the surrounding shops and restaurants, but visitors can enjoy live concerts, fireworks and festivals as well as roving entertainers and special events make them the perfect place for freeloaders.

If you have an eye for art but not the bank account it takes to buy one, check out the Franklin G. Burroughs Art Museum just across the street from Springmaid Pier. The collection includes old photos dating back to the early days in Myrtle Beach, as well as pieces by local, regional and national artists. There’s no entry fee, although guests are asked to make a small donation.

Vereen Memorial Gardens in North Myrtle Beach may be the Grand Strand’s best-kept secret. Featuring more than 100 acres of coastal swamps and hardwood forests, this free park is the perfect place to take a hike, enjoy a picnic, bird watch or photograph wild flowers and other natural wonders.
