It’s that time of year again when Philadelphians get excited about Philly Beer Week. Not only those from the city or the surrounding area, but those who specifically come to this week long event for a specific reason from far away.
Did you know that Philly Beer Week is the largest beer celebration of its kind in the United States. All of this would make perfect sense since Philadelphia has been recognized as one of the World’s Best Cities for Beer.
With so many activities in 10 days, we wanted to give you specific details and a breakdown about the upcoming events, festivals, tours, beer tastings , dinners, and much more.
Philly Beer Week is from June 3 – June 12 : Events, activities, and more
June 3, Friday
The Hammer of Glory Relay ~ Starts at 6 am & ends around 7:15 pm ~ The Hammer of Glory Relay is an annual event to where the Hammer itself is transported various ways from bar to bar throughout the city. The Hammer symbolizes the spirit and fun of Philadelphia being an unique beer-centric community. The Hammer of Glory, aka the HOG, will start at WMMR at 1 Bala Plaza, Bala Cynwyd at 6 am, as it travels to many different bars and making some non-bar stops. The Hammer will make its second bar stop at Red Owl at 433 Chestnut St around 8:45 am, hit another 23 bars, beer gardens and breweries before it ends up in the hands of a special guest, where it will be used to tap the ceremonial first keg of Philly Beer Week at 7:20 pm at The Fimore (26 East Allen St). Kick Off Lunch – Meet the brewer, Chris Wilson of Weyerbacher ~ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm ~ Held at Joe Pistola’s, Chris is a wealth of beer knowledge. He also has a degree in Physics. Come ask him why beer molecules taste better than every other molecule and other such stuff. ~ Event ~
Opening Tap ~ 7 pm – 10 pm ~ Held at The Filmore (26 East Allen Street) - $46 per person. Giving you ample samples from the region’s top breweries, 40 of which have been confirmed. Micros/brewpubs – they’ll be pouring the finest ales and lagers, including seasonal beers. Live music will be performed by The Living Sample and The Choice Cuts, The 6th Annual Philadelphia Inquirer Brew-vitational awards, and surprises with keepsake sampling cup. Want to start early, get a VIP ticket. One-hour limited audience tasting session, featuring a selection of special beers paired with complimentary beer-friendly food. All VIPs receive a souvenir drinking glass plus gift bag and this allows you to stay the rest of the evening. ~ Opening Ceremony ~

6th Annual Pints & Pinups Block Party & BBQ ~ 11:00 am – 9:00 pm ~ At Varga Bar! Great refreshing craft beers on draft and in cans from all over the country. Plus, they will be grilling up some tasty food outside all day and night! Photobooth, dunk tank, games, prizes, and much much more. Hey Ladies! International Great Beer Expo: Philly VIP Session ~ 12:30 pm – 5 pm ~ $75 VIP with 12:o0 pm arrival. – Takes place at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. 75+ Breweries / 200+ Beers - This international beer tasting event will feature an incredible variety of beers from some of the finest U.S. and international breweries while raising money for the Committee To Benefit The Children. 6th Annual Chicken Run ~ 5 pm – 11 pm ~ Held at the American Sardine Bar in Newbold/Point Breeze of South Philly. Join the Fishtown Beer Runners for a 5 mile-ish run from Philly Brewing Company to the American Sardine Bar. Tickets for the run will include a T-Shirt, 1 PBC beer, and…FRIED CHICKEN. Throwdown in Franklintown ~ 2 pm – 12 am ~ At Kite & Key in the Fairmount & Spring Garden section. What do you get when you mix Yard, Dogfish, Allagash and Kite & Key? GREAT BEER AND TOTAL MEYHEM!!! The 7th year in this Epic battle between Tom Kehoe (Yards) vs Jim Kirk (Kite & Key) and other guests. Sumo, Boxing, Chariot Wars, skills competition?? Who knows what is on Tap for this years event, but I can promise you there will be great beer, complete Mayhem and all out fun. The street will be shut down for pure chaos and tons of brews! Iron Hill 6th Annual Big Ass Beer Dinner ~ 4 pm – 12 am ~ Held at Good Dog Bar, come meet Ardmore Sr. Head Brewer Paul Rutherford, Chestnut Hill Sr. Head Brewer Chris LaPierre, and get down on our one time only BBQ menu from 4 pm till they run out. They are pouring Paul’s Hallerback Saison, The Golden Child, Summer Crush Radler, Money Cash Hops IPA, Crusher Session IPA, and Lappy’s Ardleigh Tower, Hefeweizen, Hoppy McHopface, Maibock, and The Cannibal. Danya Henniger presents coffee in the Beer Garden of Good & Evil 2.0 ~ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm ~ Held at Fergie’s Pub ~ If you love beer and you love coffee, you’re not alone! Danya will roast coffee from scratch and then we will drink said coffee and taste coffee influenced or coffee flavored or just beer that pairs well with coffee. Big Brew Day Tasting ~ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm ~ Held at St. Benjamin Brewing Taproom, their brewer Andrew Foss made a wort and they split it with the Philly Home Brew Club. Andrew and 12 teams from the Philly Home Brew then put thier interpretation on the wort. Come hang out to sample all of the variations. Beer Garden Maine Event ~ 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm ~ Held at Memphis Taproom, who will be opening the beer garden on a Tuesday, welcomes the gang from Allagash Brewing in Portland, Maine. They’ll be pouring a stellar selection of Allagash beers both outside and in. Their own Maine native, Jesse Kimball, will be putting together some special hot dogs featuring classic food Mainestays. Yes, there will be blueberries. Expect core offerings as well special releases from one of our favorite breweries in the whole darn world. ~ Event Details ~

Movie Night Under The Shambles ~ 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm ~ It’s movie night under the stars…well under the Head House Shambles in the South Street District. Join them for back to back nights of movie screenings, with free-flowing beer from Twisted Tail and a fitting choice of “TV Dinners” brought out to you to enjoy during the film. 7th Annual Get Yer Fil of Pils ~ 10:00 am – 12:00 am ~ Held at the Grey Lodge Pub in Northeast Philadelphia. Food plus great pilsners. All 10 lines will be pouring pilsners and of course it will be heavy on the locals. Various breweries will be on hand for a hour each with give-aways and more. They will be adding pierogies to the mix again. Get your fill of both pilsners and pierogies and a photo booth! Proceeds will benefit Tour de Shore, a charity bike ride that benefits first responders in our area, specifically families of fallen first responders. ~ Event Details ~
NorCal Happy Hour ~ 1:00 pm – 12:00 am ~ Held at Bru Craft & Wurst, one of their favorite events of the year. They run this one the same way since they opened, the only change these days is that the kegs tap at 1 pm for the early birds, and this year they are lucky to have newcomer Almanac join their other favorites. 3rd Sly Fox & Troegs Canwood Derby ~ 5:00 pm – 12:00 am ~ Held at Good Dog Bar, they’ll have a custom built derby track that runs the length of the bar. Allagash/Firestone Walker Comedy Night w/ Chip Chantry & Friends ~ 7:00 pm – 2:00 am ~ Held at the Pub on East Passyunk, aka P.O.P.E, comedian Chip Chantry will perform two show times at 8pm & 10pm. 8th Annual Dock Street Music Fest & Scavenger Run ~ 2:30 pm – 8:00 pm ~ Held at Dock Street Brewery in University City, the music is free & the run is $25. Everything else is Pay-As-You-Go. This year Dock Street is planning a blow-out! While others may be spending Sunday nursing hangovers and vowing never to drink again over mimosas, Dock Street are gearing up for a run, scavenger hunt, and free outdoor concert, using all that Vitamin B from a week’s worth of tipple as fuel.
