Jack loves board games, especially those from Drumond Park as they have a fantastic range. Last month we were sent the newest one in their collection ‘Pickin’ Chickens’ and it’s been a big hit with Jack.
Pickin’ Chickens is suitable for children aged 4+ and played between 2-4 players. I found this to be a great game which encouraged his learning without him even realising as it helped with colour recognition, counting skills and memory skills.
Rather than being played on a standard board, or even a square design like many games Pickin’ Chickens is based on a round spinning disc resembling that of a field. Then placed upon this field are several chicken coops. Each player takes it in turn to spin the wheel and then remove a chicken coop. Under each coop is a picture of a coloured chicken. The child then takes the correctly coloured model chicken from the pile and places it on their card in the correct colour space. The coop is then placed back on the wheel. Occasionally on turning the fox will pop up out of the tree trunk, which causes a few jumps here and there. If the fox pops up each player looses a chicken that is unless they are holding the farmer card meaning they keep their chickens. The winner is the first to collect each colour chicken.
This game has been a big hit with all of us, but especially Jack and I feel he’s learnt a lot from playing it with mastering his colour skills. The unexpectedness of the fox may appear seems to have each player on edge at each spin which is quite a fun aspect.
I think it will be a game Jack will enjoy playing for a while, and one in which they will both enjoy as Isla gets older and can join. Also, as it requires minimal set up, Jack is able to get it ready himself which is a bonus.
