Our student led Garden Design & Landscape team is enjoying a double celebration this week after being awarded two of the highest accolades at Southport Flower Show 2012. Following a‘Silver Gilt Medal' in 2011, our team won the prestigious‘Large Gold Medal' and highly coveted ‘People Choice Award' for their 2012 showgarden.

The 2012 award winning show garden was designed by 21 year old Louis Nugus (BSc Hons Horticulture) from Barrow-Upon-Humber, and constructed by College staff members, Nick Atkinson, James Fayre, and a host of Myerscough College Apprentices, including John Taylor, an apprentice landscape designer working with Fylde Borough Council.

As well as celebrating winning the top 'Large Gold' award, our team had double reason to celebrate, after visitors to the hsow judged the Myerscough garden to be the best on show, awarding our garden the coveted ‘People's Choice' award for the first time.

The show garden took Nick Atkinson and his team of apprentice landscapers 2 weeks to construct, but is the end result of 6 months of hard work and planning. Nick Atkinson, Myerscough's show garden team leader, said:

"We've been planning the design and construction of the garden since January, so winning two awards, including Large Gold, means the hard work and dedication of the team has paid off. We had a small budget compared to most gardens winning the People's Choice award makes it even more special.

"My team of students and apprentices have done themselves and the College proud. Now we've won the top award in the small garden category I'm hoping next year we can enter the large garden category and really set the students a challenge!"

Myerscough's garden also received a strong of celebrity endorsements following visits by stars of Coronation Street, actors David Neilson and Patti Clare, as well as BBC Gardeners World expert and Myerscough College Alumni, Christine Walkden.

Myerscough's Principal, Ann Turner, was overjoyed at the achievement of the team. She said:

"Being awarded Large Gold is such a magnificent achievement and winning the People's Choice Award is about as good as it gets! I attended the show and heard so many positive comments from the public. Thanks of the College go to Nick, James and the rest of the team for their tremendous hardwork, and Louis for designing such a magnificent garden."
