The FCC website today reveals the Lyve Home, a device developed by a former Apple hardware engineer which can be used to store photos and videos and which can happily reside in your living room. The small box has a touch screen on one side which allows you to control the device, but which can also be used to view pictures.

The Cupertino based company was founded by ex-Apple hardware engineer Tim Bucher who also hired Jeff Ma, the designer of the Apple TV UI. Currently the company has 90 employees and its backed by storage giant Seagate. Unfortunately there isn’t much information on the internals of the drive, but there should be Terabytes of storage capacity in the Lyve Home which has the size of a small speaker.

Obviously the most distinctive feature is the touchscreen which can be used to control the device. The Lyve Home box can also controlled using Android, iOS, Mac and Windows applications which will automatically send photos and videos you’ve made to the box.

Although all data is inside the box and not in the cloud, the Lyve Home does require an internet connection to be ‘intelligent’. By keeping an index of the files in the cloud it’s able to determine what you’re most likely want to view on what device. And once it has learned that it will start transferring it to the proper device (like your tablet or phone) to make it available as fast as possible.

The FCC listing reveals the device can connect using both Bluetooth (Low Energy) and Wifi. The device should become available soon and should cost around $299.
