2014-05-17

Obviously anyone making predictions on who will win the opening round of the Lucas Oils AMA Nationals, set for Glen Helen on May 24 is guessing, because nobody really knows what will happen, and many of us will be miles off with our tips, but I have a good feeling about German sensation and former World MX2 Champion Ken Roczen going for the overall victory.

The Red Bull KTM Factory rider showed amazing speed in his Supercross debut and we all know he is a much better Motocrosser than Supercross rider.

In my opinion by seasons end he will eventually become the third best Motocross rider in the World this year (behind Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings) and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go 1-1 in Glen Helen.

For those lucky enough to witness the 2013 MXoN Roczen was a class or two above riders like Dungey and Barcia (and he was on a 250) and I think Glen Helen might throw up some roughness of it’s own to match the German circuit that hosted last years Motocross of Nations.

Roczen actually beat Barcia by nearly a minute in the MX2/Open moto at the MXoN and was miles ahead of Dungey in the MX2/MX1 moto. Results from the last Motocross race held for these riders has to tell for something, right?

The Glen Helen circuit is a tough one, one that will take riders being consistent and not taking big risks, and a rider like James Stewart just doesn’t live by that rule, that is why I think Ryan Dungey will finish second to give KTM a double.

As you all might remembe the only rider finishing ahead of Roczen and Dungey in the recently finished AMA Supercross series was Ryan Villopoto, who is now out with injury. Form also says something and the German and America are the most consistent men going into the Nationals.

A major drawback is the fact Eli Tomac is out, Chad Reed has been out for a long time and it’s unknown how he will perform, and Mike Alessi is also a bit of a question mark.

That is why I go with Stewart finishing third with a good moto and a bad moto, but enough points to podium.

Outsiders should be Justin Barcia, Brett Metcalfe and Trey Canard. Seems to be some interest in Malcolm Stewart doing well, but I just can’t see it. The 250 SX class has always thrown up riders who perform well indoors, but are much less interesting outdoors and I think that will be the case with the younger Stewart.

In the 250 class the two most technical riders in America, Christophe Pourcel and Marvin Musquin will fight for the overall, with former World MX2 Champion Pourcel getting the upper hand over his fellow Frenchman and another former World MX2 Champion in Musquin.

I think the relaxed styles of these guys will make the Glen Helen circuit perfect for both and their no-risk attitudes will see them both come through strong.

American Blake Baggett should also be on the podium.

The great news is all four motos will be shown live online so all you European fans, get set for a long evening on the the night of the 24th and the morning of the 25th of May. We might have a double celebration as the euro’s continue their domination of World Motocross.

For more information and live timing for the 24th of May event go to these two links and also more information below in our special section for this event.

Next week we will have more information on the live streaming.
