Mouse on Mars’ latest album, coming out next month, is a massive work that involves an amazing number of collaborators. The German electronic duo celebrates their 21 years as a band with all their friends on this anticipated album.
21 Again is seriously a group effort- the album boasts 30 total collaborative artists, including Tortoise, Laetitia Saider, Herbert, and Tyondai Braxton. DJ Scotch Egg is among another 10 musicians offering interludes on the album.
21 again is Mouse on Mars’ end of year bash, and the sheer number of artists working with Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma on the album makes it a party you don’t want to miss. The juggernaut of an album will have 29 songs along with the interludes, and it will be on two CDs. It’s a fitting celebration of the band’s 21 years together- and of their “coming of age.”
The press release says the album will offer jaunts into all sorts of sounds; “laid-back disco funk with Tim Gane (Stereolab / Cavern of Anti-Matter),” “spinning jittery dream pop with Scratch Pet Land,” “desert polka” with Candie Hank, “anthemic hip-hop excursions” with Modeselektor and Puppetmastaz, and “neo-post-rock” with Tortoise and Laetitia Sadier. Truly, “21 again is an ode to joy and to the friends of the band, yet also an homage to constant dialogue and diversity.” It’s this culture of constant change and reinvention that’s kept Mouse on Mars together and relevant for so long.
The album as a whole could seem confusing, given the sheer number and diversity of talent working on a single production, but the band tells fans “not to take it all too seriously” since “anything could change any minute.” 21 Again is meant to be fun, a testament to the band’s innovative spirit, and to the friendships made along the way.
