Yellow Hammer “Would you be surprised to learn that the biggest funder of animal testing in the country is the federal government? The government spends as much as $14.5 billion per year on animal experimentation, with some projects siphoning off taxpayer dollars for decades and resulting in the cruel treatment of an unknown number of animals.
Animal testing: wasteful and morally unjust
“According to an analysis of government data, the National Institutes of Health spends between $12 billion and nearly $14.5 billion on animal testing every year. According to NIH documents, about 47 percent of research grants have an animal research-based component. This number has been fairly stable over the last decade….
“The controversial nature of government-backed animal testing has actually created an unlikely coalition of fiscal conservatives and animals rights activists who usually don’t share common ground. Both sides argue that NIH funding for animal testing should be cut.” Read more.
“The Gross Misconception: Your Child or Your Dog: Informed people are able to understand that making such a choice is ludicrous and unnecessary, but the biomedical and pharmaceutical companies continue to generate lies in order to make money. Vivisection is a business. It uses images of sick children and notions of medical necessity to play upon our sympathies and generate revenue. By producing inaccurate data and squandering incalculable resources, vivisection has cost millions of children their lives. Children all over the world routinely die from starvation and curable diseases while we waste millions on animal experimentation.” Last Chance for Animals, here.
Animal cruelty is unacceptable: so is taxation. No way, we won’t pay.
“Selected from scientific papers published in 2009 and 2010 (as well as one from 2008), these experiments were funded by the NIH, approved by federally mandated oversight committees, and published in peer-reviewed journals. These experiments—the cream of the crop—show that your tax dollars and animals’ lives are frivolously wasted on research that adds nothing to medical progress and tells us nothing we care to know—or didn’t know already. One can only wonder what happens in the experiments that don’t get published…” Read more.
Washington Post “In a significant step toward ending controversial biomedical research using chimpanzees, the federal government announced a decision… to retire all but about 50 of the animals available for testing and retire them to sanctuaries. The National Institutes of Health has been phasing out its funding and use of research chimps for at least two years but still houses nearly 400 chimps in facilities across the country. All except up to 50 of those remaining will be placed in sanctuaries in the coming months, NIH Director Francis S. Collins said.” Read more.

“We have persuaded the National Institutes of Health to agree to release the vast majority of government-owned chimpanzees from laboratories and to transfer them to accredited sanctuaries, and our petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has resulted in a proposed action to list all chimpanzees as endangered. We have secured bans on animal testing for cosmetics in the European Union and India, and these are two major gains in our campaign to end animal testing on a global basis.” Read more Watch this video about HSUS investigation into Catelli Brothers Calf Slaughter Plant, here.

Ag-Gag Bill Will Hurt Activism
IBJ “Senate Bill 101 would create a crime known as “agricultural mischief” and it’s aimed primarily at stopping secret videography and photography of farming operations.
“The first ag-gag law of 2014 has been introduced in Indiana: SB 101. If passed, this law would empower agricultural operations to make anything that happens on their property into a felony, simply by posting it on a sign on their property. One imagines that the lists they plan on posting won’t include things like ‘don’t torture animals’ and will be more along the lines of ‘no whistleblowing’, ‘no performing of undercover investigations’ and ‘no revealing all the nasty and illegal things we do here…” Thankfully, all ag-gag bills introduced in 2013 were defeated, and hopefully 2014 will turn out the same….” Read more.
In Defense of Animals: We are all Earthlings
“The rights of animals are birthrights, similar to those we claim for ourselves—the right to live our lives free of subjugation and institutionalized violence, where the random and special joys of being alive can be experienced.
“The Golden Rule is not a ‘do-gooders’ slogan. We need to treat others as we want to be treated not only for their sake, but also because our own good is interwoven with the good of others, including other species. Animal Rights and Human Rights are linked at their core, because how we treat those most affected by our actions is the best reflection of who we are as a species. We must strive to do right when our actions, needs and interests intersect with those of other species….” Read more.

“This is the single most powerful and informative movie about society’s treatment of animals. A must see for anyone who cares enough to know” – Woody Harrelson
“While we all enjoy the glitz, glitter and acrobatics of the circus, few of us think of what circus life means to the animals. Elephants, tigers, bears, camels, zebras and other animals spend their lives on the road virtually year round, shuffled from parking lot to parking lot, locked in tiny cages and on train cars or trucks for days at a time. They are trained with physical punishment: bullhooks, whips, electrical prods and other devices are routinely used to inflict pain and fear to force the elephants, tigers and other animals to perform….” Read more.
Ann and Nancy Wilson join musicians speaking up about animal mistreatment.
Rolling Stone Blackfish, a documentary that hit theaters and CNN last year chronicling the life of an orca that killed a trainer at Sea World, has proven to be a public relations nightmare for the theme park. They’ve strongly challenged the film’s allegations that their orcas are mistreated, labeling the movie ‘inaccurate and misleading.’
“But it still caused Heart, Cheap Trick, Willie Nelson, REO Speedwagon, 38 Special, Martina McBride and many others to cancel their planned shows at the park. We spoke with Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson about their decision to back out of their gig at Sea World. Here are excerpts from the conversation…
Ann Wilson: “Seeing Blackfish just really opened our eyes to a lot of really horrific truths about how Sea World treats their orcas. It really broke my heart and I just couldn’t see signing my name to that. We hate to disappoint people who go to hear our music, but this was a larger issue.
Before seeing the movie, I always imagined the orcas got to live in a big extended oceanic area when they weren’t performing, but they live in a steel swimming pool and it basically drives them insane. Not to mention that somebody died. It’s almost Disney-esque in a really tragic way. Again, we just couldn’t go make a bunch of money from them and sign our names and underline it…..” Read more. Third-Trimester Abortion by lethal injection
“ ‘There is nothing empowering to women about bringing abortion-on-demand up to the moment of birth to New York,” said Lori Kehoe, Executive Director of New York State Right to Life. “In a day and age when females can be killed in utero simply for the crime of not being male, it is a mockery of what our feminist foremothers stood for to try and force this on New Yorkers. Women’s rights must begin in the womb, or women have no rights at all.’
“The tenth point of the Women’s Equality Act, the point of contention between the Assembly and the Senate, would expand access to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy for essentially any reason, would allow non-doctors to perform these surgical procedures, and provides no conscience protections for medical professionals opposed to taking human life….” Read more.
“Each year, twenty-three million animals are pointlessly hurt and killed in the name of research. Dogs, cats, monkeys, rabbits, pigs, and birds are just a few of the victims who have screws driven into their skulls, their spinal columns severed, their eyes sewn shut, and their bodies filled with toxic chemicals. Frequently, these procedures are done without anesthetic, and almost invariably without concern for the animal’s pain and misery. Virtually every one of these animals suffers in lonely agony before it is finally killed.
“The biological and cellular differences between species are often too great to extrapolate experimental results from test animals to humans. Medications, proven safe in animals, are frequently withdrawn after being found unsafe in people.” Read more.
“It’s a fact: animal experimentation is a BIG GOVERNMENT program. And If you believe big government programs are inherently wasteful, inefficient, and incompetent, then you must question taxpayer-funded animal experiments. Every year the government wastes over $12 BILLION in tax dollars to pay for painful, cruel, and unnecessary experiments on animals. Guess who picks up the bill? You do, every April 15.
“For example, the federal government’s…“stimulus” spending program wasted $144,541 of our tax dollars on a single experiment to study how cocaine affects addicted monkeys at Wake Forrest University. The result? We ‘learned’ that cocaine is bad for you.” Read more.
Question: ”How many monkeys does it take to convince experimenters that baby animals are frightened when ripped away from their mothers?”

PETA “Musician Dave Navarro is known for his body art, guitar shredding, and iconic rocker look. His intense rocker style includes an array of beauty products that help give him his dark edge, but some makeup was too dark for even him. When Dave discovered that some companies perform cruel experiments on animals in order to test their products, the only choice was to go cruelty-free.
Dave Navarro: Stop Animal Testing
“Around the world, rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other animals are force-fed products or endure the pain of having chemicals applied to their sensitive eyes and skin for product tests––even though the results of animal tests are unreliable and not applicable to humans. These cruel tests are not required by law in the U.S., and they’ve been banned in the European Union and Israel. Cruelty-free products are manufactured by companies that refuse to poison and kill animals in crude product tests. In his ad with PETA, Dave is putting himself in the shoes of the animals who live a painful life and suffer an agonizing death for these archaic experiments.
“I’m all for cruelty-free testing!”
“‘I Defy Anyone to Watch This Stuff and Explain Why It’s OK.’ Dave takes us behind the scenes at his edgy photo shoot with PETA, urging everyone to help stop product testing on animals by choosing to purchase only cruelty-free products. The best way to stop companies from using animals is to refuse to purchase their products and to let them know that you won’t buy their products as long as they support tests on animals.” Read more.
“Nine out of every 10 candidate medicines that appear safe and effective during animal tests, fail when given to humans—a waste of billions of Euros, millions of animal lives, and all the while failing to effectively address pressing human health needs. Industry, animal welfare advocates, government agencies and regulators are united in acknowledging the need for new human-relevant research approaches to address this problem….”
“Consider, for example, the fact that the National Cancer Institute has spent billions of dollars on animal experimentation. The myth that such research produced the main chemotherapeutic drugs supports the continuance of this funding.
“The medical schools and research facilities of the biomedical establishment that share in this bonanza are certainly not going to let mere facts interfere with this lucrative business. So even though the historical facts show that animal experiments were worse than useless in selecting clinically effective cancer chemotherapies – they were consistently misleading – the ‘consensus of authorities’ will continue to say just the opposite. They may claim to love the truth, but when it is a matter of truth versus dollars, they love the dollars more.” Read more.
Buy Cruelty-Free Products
PETA “More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests as well as in biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities. Exact numbers aren’t available because mice, rats, birds, and cold-blooded animals—who make up more than 95 percent of animals used in experiments—are not covered by even the minimal protections of the Animal Welfare Act and therefore go uncounted.
“To test cosmetics, household cleaners, and other consumer products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year by cruel corporations. Mice and rats are forced to inhale toxic fumes, dogs are force-fed pesticides, and rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their skin and eyes. Many of these tests are not even required by law, and they often produce inaccurate or misleading results. Even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to consumers. Cruel and deadly toxicity tests are also conducted as part of massive regulatory testing programs that are often funded by U.S. taxpayers’ money.
Replace Animal Testing with Humane Alternatives
“The Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Toxicology Program, and the Department of Agriculture are just a few of the government agencies that subject animals to painful and crude tests.
“The federal government and many health charities waste precious dollars from taxpayers and generous donors on cruel and misleading animal experiments at universities and private laboratories instead of spending them on promising clinical, in vitro and epidemiological studies that are actually relevant to humans.
“Millions of animals also suffer and die for classroom biology experiments and dissection, even though modern alternatives have repeatedly been shown to teach students better, save teachers time, and save schools money.
“Each of us can help save animals from suffering and death in experiments by demanding that our alma maters stop experimenting on animals, by buying cruelty-free products, by donating only to charities that don’t experiment on animals, by requesting alternatives to animal dissection and by demanding the immediate implementation of humane, effective non-animal tests by government agencies and corporations.
“PETA’s extensive worldwide campaign to expose and end the use of animals in experiments is wide-ranging. In addition to our well-known groundbreaking undercover work and colorful advocacy campaigns to educate the public, with the help of our members and supporters we push government agencies to stop funding and conducting experiments on animals; encourage pharmaceutical, chemical, and consumer products companies to replace tests on animals with more effective non-animal methods; help students and teachers end dissection in the classroom; fund humane non-animal research; publish scientific papers; and urge health charities not to invest in dead-end tests on animals.
“Our staff is working on these issues, and this multifaceted approach yields scores of victories for animals locked in laboratories every year. Browse cruelty-free companies and products, here.
Dogs’ status as “man’s best friend” offers them no protection from being locked in lonely cages and forced to endure excruciating experiments.
“Dogs are also abused in human-disease studies, including studies of heart and hormonal disorders. At Ohio State University, vivisector George Billman forced surgically manipulated dogs to run on a treadmill until they collapsed from a heart attack. The dogs were killed, and the damage to their heart tissue was studied.” Read more. Read here.
Change.Org “The validation and regulatory acceptance of non-animal alternative tests is critical to the adoption of more humane scientific methodologies.
“Virtually all federally funded research is paid for with your tax dollars. Two of the main funders of animal-based research in North America, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, need to hear that you don’t want your tax dollars used to underwrite animal experiments and urge them to stop requiring cruel and obsolete animal tests for pharmaceuticals and allow companies to substitute in vitro tests.
Wasteful painful and ineffective animal experiments: Your tax dollars at work!
“Alternatives to animal tests are effective, reliable, affordable and humane. Proponents of non-animal testing methods in the scientific community have shown that these methods are quicker and cost-effective. Unlike crude, archaic animal tests, non-animal methods usually take less time to complete, cost only a fraction of what the animal experiments they replace cost, and are not plagued with species differences that make extrapolation difficult or impossible.
“Forward-thinking companies are exploring modern alternatives. For example, Pharmagene Laboratories, based in Royston, England, is the first company to use only human tissues and sophisticated computer technologies in the process of drug development and testing. With tools from molecular biology, biochemistry, and analytical pharmacology, Pharmagene conducts extensive studies of human genes and how drugs affect those genes or the proteins they make. While some companies have used animal tissues for this purpose, Pharmagene scientists believe that the discovery process is much more efficient with human tissues.
“Comparative studies of human populations allow doctors and scientists to discover the root causes of human diseases and disorders so that preventive action can be taken. Epidemiological studies led to the discoveries of the relationship between smoking and cancer and to the identification of heart disease risk factors. Population studies also demonstrated the mechanism of the transmission of AIDS and other infectious diseases and also showed how these diseases can be prevented.
“In the course of treating patients, much has been learned about the causes of diseases and disorders. Studies of human patients using sophisticated scanning technology (e.g., MRI, PET, and CT) have isolated abnormalities in the brains of patients with schizophrenia and other disorders.
PETA activists stage stunt to expose animal cruelty
“Cell and tissue culture (in vitro) studies are used to screen for anti-cancer, anti-AIDS, and other types of drugs, and they are also a means of producing and testing a number of other pharmaceutical products, including vaccines, antibiotics, and therapeutic proteins. The U.S. National Disease Research Interchange provides more than 120 types of human tissue to scientists investigating diabetes, cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, glaucoma, and other human diseases. In vitro genetic research has isolated specific markers, genes, and proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, schizophrenia, and other inherited diseases.
“Those who experiment on animals artificially induce disease; clinical investigators study people who are already ill or who have died. Animal experimenters want a disposable “research subject” who can be manipulated as desired and killed when convenient; clinicians must do no harm to their patients or study participants. Animal experimenters face the unavoidable fact that their artificially created ‘animal model’ can never fully reflect the human condition, whereas clinical investigators know that the results of their work are directly relevant to people.
“Alternatives to the use of animals in toxicity testing include replacing animal tests with non-animal methods, as well as modifying animal-based tests to reduce the number of animals used and to minimize pain and distress. Non-animal tests are generally faster and less expensive than the animal tests they replace and improve upon.
“To date, several non-animal test methods have been formally validated and accepted by some countries as replacements for an existing animal test. Examples include:
An embryonic stem cell test, using mouse-derived cells to assess potential toxicity to developing embryos, has been validated as a partial replacement for birth-defect testing in rats and rabbits.
The 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake Phototoxicity Test, which uses cells grown in culture to assess the potential for sunlight-induced (“photo”) irritation to the skin.
Human skin model tests such as the validated EpiDerm™ test, which has been accepted almost universally as a total replacement for skin corrosion studies in rabbits.
The use of human skin leftover from surgical procedures or donated cadavers can be used to measure the rate at which a chemical is able to penetrate the skin.
The use of a clinical patch test in human volunteers, which can confirm that a chemical will not cause irritation or allergic skin reactions.

They all stand behind our campaign to end the military’s use of animals in trauma and chemical casualty training exercises.
“Every year, thousands of animals, including pigs, goats, and monkeys, are used in exercises organized by the Department of Defense. Current exercises include shooting, stabbing, and burning live pigs; cutting goats’ legs off with sharp shears; and poisoning monkeys with toxic chemicals—all to train medics on how to treat human injuries on the battlefield. These exercises are still being conducted on many military bases in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world, despite the availability of superior non-animal methods.” Read more.
