==Recording and production==

Chvrches began work on their second album in January 2015, six weeks after returning from touring to promote ''[[The Bones of What You Believe]]''.<ref name="Snapes 2015">{{cite web|last1=Snapes|first1=Laura|title=Keeping it Unreal: In the Studio with Chvrches|url=http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/9670-keeping-it-unreal-in-the-studio-with-chvrches/|publisher=''Pitchfork Media''|date=22 June 2015}}</ref> Recording took place in a studio in a basement flat owned by Cook,<ref name="Nicholson 2015">{{cite news|last1=Nicholson|first1=Rebecca|title=Chvrches: ‘We could have sold 200,000 more records if we hid us boys out of view’|url=http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/aug/20/chvrches-we-could-have-sold-200000-more-records-if-we-hid-the-boys-out-of-view|accessdate=26 September 2015|work=The Guardian|date=20 August 2015}}</ref> refurbished with the advance for the new album.<ref name="Snapes 2015"/> The trio would write a rough instrumental, Mayberry would pen lyrics and they would then put together a demo track.<ref name="Rickman 2015">{{cite web|last1=Rickman|first1=Martin|title=Clear Eyes: How CHVRCHES Learned To Ignore The Hype, And Haters, For Their Big Second Album|url=http://uproxx.com/music/2015/09/chvrches-every-open-eye-feature/|website=Uproxx|date=24 September 2015}}</ref> The band wrote around thirty demos in all.<ref name="Haynes 2015">{{cite web|last1=Haynes|first1=Gavin|title=Chvrches Interview: The Synth-Pop Heartbreakers On The "Avalanche Of Sound" On Their New Album|url=http://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/chvrches-interview-the-synth-pop-heartbreakers-on-the-avalanche-of-sound-on-their-new-album|website=NME|date=16 July 2015}}</ref> Producing all the music themselves,<ref name="Savage 2015">{{cite news|last1=Savage|first1=Mike|title=Chvrches interview: 'We won't live in fear'|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34340401|work=BBC News Online|date=26 September 2015}}</ref> they recorded 21 tracks in total. The recording process took about five months, with the band working six-hour days, five days a week.<ref name="Haynes 2015"/> The band were approached about the prospect of co-writing songs for the album, but refused; Doherty explained: "As we were making this album, a bunch of people offered to write with us, but we wanted to be an actual band."<ref name="Snapes 2015"/> Cook noted that they wanted the album "to sound and to feel spontaneous".<ref name="Nicholson 2015" />

"Clearest Blue", the seventeenth track recorded for the album, "came to define how the rest sounds", according to Doherty: "big and happy and sad and a banger".<ref name="Haynes 2015"/> The group determined democratically which tracks would be included on the album, and were in disagreement over inclusion of "Afterglow". On the final day of recording they slowed it down, removed the drum track and re-recorded the vocal track.<ref name="Haynes 2015"/> The vocals were recorded in a single take, with various background noises left in. Witnessing Mayberry's performance, Doherty was "quite emotional", and they made the decision that the track would close the album.<ref name="Savage 2015"/>
