Ambode, wife urge end to genital mutilation
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in collaboration with GemWoman Magazine and Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) has unveiled an application, Cupid APP/ ABBY’s Line, to contain the menace of sexual violence.
The launch yesterday in Lagos was part of the global organisation’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign which kicked off on November 25 and ends on December 10.
The solution aims to help women in distress and is available on smartphones via Google Play Store.
Speaking on its workability at a symposium yesterday with the theme, “Orange the World: Raise money to end violence against women and girls”, the Chairman of GemWoman Publications, Kunle Olawale said: “My Cupid App is generally a love App but hidden in it, is what is called the ABBY’S line which is a click away or hub for concerned people around one who could watch and rush to help in case of abuse.”
He added that the portal was pre-programmed to send alerts to friends, neighbours, close relatives and even the security agents in time of distress.
“It is an application that is on your phone which allows you register the lines of close friends, family members, security agents or neighbours and we recommend people that are very proximate should be registered because we found out that most abuses are carried out in the house when nobody is around. Once you send out ‘violence is about to start’ alerts through the application, an SMS message is sent to the pre-programmed numbers and am sure one of them will receive it and easily come to your rescue.”
Director of UNIC, Ronald Kayanja, represented by the National Information Officer, Oluseyi Soremekun, said violence against women and girls was a human rights violation.
He gave the goodwill message on behalf UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Meanwhile, Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State and his wife, Bolanle, have has called for an end to female genital mutilation.
Mrs. Ambode, who is also the founder of Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), sought multi-disciplinary approach to ending the practice, stressing that such effort would involve legislation, professional health organisations, women empowerment and public sensitisation.
They both made the call in Alausa, Ikeja at a high-level meeting organised by her organisation in collaboration with UNICEF, UNFPA and AHI to discuss the worrisome practice.
