December 15 clearly feels like Hideo Kojima appreciation day. Whether this day is unofficial or not, we look back at four of the best games from the franchise Kojima created, i.e. Metal Gear. The series has spawned several top games, but there are four that we recommend playing, and these should be part of your bucket list.

Metal Gear Solid (1998)

This is the one that started it all. \”Metal Gear Solid\” was released in 1998 to critical acclaim on the PlayStation. It was the first time we saw Solid Snake and what an awesome adventure it was. It has since been ported to several consoles including the Sony handheld PSP and even the PS3 in later years. It redefined stealth-action gameplay and coined the term “Tactical Espionage Action.” Solid Snake tries to contain a terrorist threat in a nuclear facility from rogue Special Forces outfit FOXHOUND. We still love to play the game from the top-down interface and it brings back memories of a time when gaming had made the shift from 2D side scrolling to 3D. Without MGS, we would have never seen the other amazing games in the series.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)

One of the best games ever to release on the PS2 was \”MGS 3: Snake Eater.\” Even today, it ranks as perhaps one of the biggest games in the franchise. We could even say it’s bigger and better than the original. It’s a departure from its predecessors, because it introduces to us for the first time Naked Snake. We play the genetic “father” of Solid Snake who will eventually become Big Boss. In Snake Eater, he is a hero who by the end of the game becomes a legendary soldier. It’s also set in nature, so you are not confined to buildings. It has some brilliant boss battles, especially within the Cobra Unit. Our favorite is the one against Volgin and the politically themed storyline still resonates with fans today.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013)

If there is one game in the MGS franchise that stands out from the rest, this is the one and for good reason. \”Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance\” gives us control of the Raiden character from \”MGS 2: Sons of Liberty.\” This time Raiden is supercharged and armed with an awesome blade that can slice enemies in half with ease. It’s developed by Platinum Games, who have been behind the \”Bayonetta\” games and \”Vanquish.\” Stealth is not the order of the day as Raiden confronts enemies head on. It’s a short adventure, but still an entertaining one. Despite the length, its sheer awesomeness makes us want to play it again and again.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)

\”Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain\” is Kojima’s final game for Konami and it is perhaps the best in the entire franchise. Hideo Kojima has officially left Konami and may never work on another MGS game. It has been said that one should save the best for last and MGS V is just that. We get the same stealth-action the series is known for, but in an open world and it’s brilliant. From building the new Mother Base to recruiting soldiers, weapons and vehicles, the game offers everything. Set in Afghanistan and Africa, your job as Venom Snake (formerly Naked Snake) aka Big Boss is to build your Diamond Dogs army and take on Cipher. You drive the narrative by planning and executing the missions the way you want them, and be wary of anything that could go wrong. MGS 3 comes very close but MGS V is our pick of the best in the series so far.
