FanDuel & DraftKings strategy, guide, tips and advice to build the best lineup in order to help you win your daily fantasy sports contests.  The team at Moxyball is here to help you build a bankroll and look at pointers and principles to play by on any DFS platform you may choose.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions on both our DFS NBA Basketball and DFS NFL Football Platforms asking about strategy behind playing daily fantasy sports on FanDuel.  From this, an idea was formed: Moxyball DFS University.

Our first edition will be a crash course focusing on FanDuel strategy – a FanDuel Guide full of our tips that should help improve your chances to win money over time.  We will be touching on a few quick tips that should help anyone learn the ropes with respect to many aspects of DFS, including choosing the right format, playing within your means, and a couple other quick pointers.

Over time, as Moxyball DFS University evolves, we will be going more in-depth on each of these topics.  But let’s get the ball rolling and start with an overview of the FanDuel landscape.

An Introduction

This article takes you through a handful of strategy notes from the Moxyball team when it comes to playing DFS on FanDuel and DraftKings in particular.

The majority of the content is sport-agnostic and applies to any and all daily fantasy sports – regardless if you’re playing baseball, basketball or football. You’ll notice a few times where we talk to things on a “weekly” basis (i.e. football) – but these same principles hold true across baseball and basketball. Just replace “week” with “day/night” and the takeaway will still apply.

Enjoy!

What Format are Your DFS Picks Geared Towards?

In making any of our daily fantasy picks, unless otherwise noted – they are for the 50/50 format.  Why 50/50? We feel that this format is the best for long-term success, just having to finish above the median finish in order to make a profit from the contest.

That is not to say that we don’t like the lineups that we publish for tournaments – but we do feel that the 50/50 format makes for a much smoother ride to building your DFS bankroll.

Always Play Within Your Means. Always.

We play this for fun, and as a hobby – we are not playing FanDuel to make a living.  The goal for anyone who wants to play and build their DFS bankroll should be to make your deposit, and to never have to make another deposit again.

Play within your means, and slowly build up your winnings.  If you lose one day, don’t double your bet, or the amount of contests that you enter unless you are ready to make another deposit because at the end of the day – as much as you trust any process behind making your DFS picks, the results are out of your control – anything can happen in sports.

Check out our Bankroll Management article (going live on April 30) for an in-depth look at how to work with your cash on sites like FD, DK and DR.

FanDuel tournaments are higher risk, but carry higher reward upside.

What Changes Would You Make to Your Picks for GPP Tournaments?

We are happy to enter our posted daily picks into any large tournament.  However, we take the approach of consistently building up our FanDuel earnings over time.

That is not to say we do not dabble in taking on a little more risk – in exchange for a lineup we feel is better suited to have the potential of faring extremely well in any large DFS Tournament.  In doing this, we like to look for players that have high upside – and are going to be underowned by the DFS community.

It goes without saying that if the player is started in a low % of leagues and you have him on your roster for the day – you are going to be sitting pretty.  However, we do not like to do this for all of our picks because the volatility in terms of what to expect is just to great.

Keep in mind that on FanDuel, almost all GPPs pay out to the top 19% of finishers. Said one other way, 81% of entries don’t win. They are not designed for consistently cashing… instead, they are appealing to users that are interested in “playing the lottery” in hopes they can get a big return on their investment (entry fee).

A Different Take on Price Point for Entries

While playing on FD, one tip we have is that generally the lower the entry fee is for the contest, the softer the competition tends to be.  So, what we recommend you do – is rather than enter a $50 50/50 format, enter ten times at the $5 level.  Or instead of entering a $10 50/50 format, enter the $1 format 10 times.

The lower the dollar amount, the less experienced I would expect your competition to be – which should result in easier competition.  There are also more contestants in the lower priced contests, which increases the playing field you are playing against.

For instance, in the $109 50/50 formats, there are only 10 entries per contest.  Run into a hot lineup and that is 10% of the field.

Sure, it works both ways and someone could potentially put up a dud week.  But at the higher price points, generally, you will run into a higher percentage of sharp players.

That is not to say that you can’t consistently beat the higher priced formats.  However, as a generally rule – when in doubt, we like to go with multiple entries at a lower price point.

Best of luck!
