Because Life is Too Short for Bad Podcasts

MovieViral has rounded up a selection of great film podcasts for your consideration. It’s not an exhaustive list by any means. But it is a fairly safe guarantee of a good listen: entertaining, informative and relaxing.

In no particular order.here we go..

PODCASTING THEM SOFTLY

Nick Clement and Frank Mengarelli talk all things film both as a double act and with some genuinely distinguished interviewees. A great companion listen alongside their excellent Facebook posts and articles that we republish here.

NOW PLAYING PODCAST

Jake, Stu and Arnie take one franchise series at a time and review each entry. They also have a donor series for which you pay a small fee but get lots of bonus content. Insightful, well informed and currently looking at the STAR WARS series.

OLIVER HARPER’S RETROSPECTIVES

An articulate and measured look at the development, merits and legacy of classic film series, punctuated by slightly more relaxed round table podcasts for the lads. Recent hits include many of the CANNON movies (MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, SUPERMAN IV) as well as  self contained studies of ALIEN, STAR TREK 2 and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS features. Also teams with DUNCAN CASEY (we interviewed him recently).

MAKING STAR WARS

A sometimes spoilerific podcast here, punctuated by general news and comment. But look at it this way: if a spoiler is flagged up then it’s ok and some people do WANT spoilers and speculation so why not listen?

JAMES BOND RADIO

It’s the latest thing from Q Branch: it’s called JAMES BOND RADIO! (A Skyfall reference; a true fan would get that). Two very normal, sporty blokes. Talking James Bond. Funny. Informative. Respectful of the series’ legacy. Fun.

FATMAN ON BATMAN

Typical Kevin Smith here. Except it isn’t. Because amidst the usual four letter swearing and references to drugs and sex and food and trivia, you get some incredible insights to the writing and film making processes. Also some great and exclusive interviews (recently, Josh ‘Fantastic 4′ Trank!!). Batman is the nominal focus but just the platform for chat.

MODERN MYTH MEDIA

A lovingly crafted, detailed and devoted podcast that covers all things to do with Marvel and DC Comics on film, whilst touching down on some other franchise products, too. It’s well informed and considerate comment, fueled by genuine passion and insight as well as genuine fanboy speculation and appreciation. Chaired by Sean Gerber.

THE BLACK DOG PODCAST

A distinctly British and adult take on film news and reviewing, with themed focus on a particular franchise or film or genre each episode. The humor is not to everyone’s tastes, but this is a fun, irreverent and friendly podcast. It feels like going down to the local Pub and having a cold beverage and a game of Pool /Darts, followed by a bit of movie chat. Beware: they do like to discuss their bowel movements, but then that is a feature of many a podcast!

THE HOLLYWOOD GAUNTLET

A sadly occasional and irregular yet always detailed and very professional product. These commentators take a movie apart at a very technical and academic level. It requires your focused attention, but you are always rewarded for that so it is worth a listen, every time.

Have a listen to any of those examples and you should be entertained and informed as a result! We will keep you informed of any similar discoveries.

And feel free to recommend further examples or start your own and ask if we can listen / promote it. Drawback is it takes a LONG time to turn a profit but if you do it simply for the fun and the following then simply doing the thing is a reward in itself, right?

Happy Podcasting!
